You should get hold of CA4WDC and they can give you all the scoop about 4 wheeling the area and especially check out their Panamint Valley Days event. Must do items; Trona Pinnacles, giant formations sticking up out of the desert. Panamint Mts. great 4 wheel trips up out of Ballarat, including Coyote Cyn. or Goler Gulch of Manson Family fame or infamy. Death Valley and Saline Valley with Cerro Gordo mine to the west are also must do's. Or you can go further west to Last Chance Cyn. and Red Rock Cyn. These are just a few of many in the area. The only caution, the summers can be brutal, even hotter than Moab.

Lived in cantil off of highway 14 in the early 80s and used to go see movies in california city. Pretty sure it hasn't changed much....oh and those mojave green rattlesnakes are no joke

Mojave Green is pissed off out of the shell, doesn't back down or run away, and has the worst venom of the rattlers. And doesn't always rattle. Panamint Speckled Rattler is mild mannered and laid back. Still has a helluva hit. And don't mess with the Desert Tortoise. Don't pick them up, they might pee. Bad for them, since they recycle their water. Bad for you, they are very protected.

I've always liked snakes and tend to pick them up so I am grateful for the information. I'll just let them be. Hope I see one though.

I had a co-worker at China Lake that always carried his capture box and gear. The one day he didn't have his stuff we ran across a very angry Green. I carry a golf club to coax snakes to move on, my bud used to snag that angry snake... Snake chased us when he was let loose. I don't mess the Green.

I can honestly say I have never been chased by a snake...that is crazy. I'm glad I typically hike with hiking poles.

My parents left today for a 18 month mission to San Diego so they started a new adventure too. At least I'll only be 3 hours from them
