What did you build your 4x4 for?

What type of 'wheelin' did you build you vehicle for?

There will always be a challenge, as there will always be people who have the guts (or stupidity..depending on who you ask) to try the "uber-insano" line, and the definition of that line will constantly be changing as well. As for me, I have rebuilt or added to my rig several times...every time I find something that stops it. I am currently at the 4-4+ level, but don't think my XJ will go any further. The money it would require to take it to the 5-5+ level would be much better invested in a buggy the way I see it.

I voted 4 for me. I felt very comfortable in the old XJ with the gears/locker/tire combo, and was able to get most of the harder jive out of my system. 4, or maybe even a 4+ once in awhile is great for me, but then again, I am still learning how to maneuver the big Landcruiser around, it being MUCH bigger than the XJ...
I mostly use my rig to drive around town, and hit my camping spots that are off the beaten paths most others take. More than anything, it is nice to know what I can do, and do anything easier with ease.

I originally started to build my Rubicon for 'difficult' stuff, but the more I did the 'difficult' stuff, the harder I found to run it on. Back then I was thinking 4.5" lift and 31" tires was all I needed (with lockers, winch, roll cage, etc.). Soon after I realized it wasn't capable of doing what I wanted, and now I'm with 5.5" of lift and 35" tires. I still know it won't do what I want, but I think rather than destroy my Rubicon, I think I'll build a trail rig for 'fun' stuff and then drop the Rubicon down to 4.5" of lift and 33" tires for the 'family' trails.

Like others, I'm happy on a scenic 1+ or a technical 4+ - I just like getting out, meeting people, and seeing the sights.

IT looks a LOT like Brad Lovell's Ranger--which, in fact, is street legal where he lives. (at least, it was legal, registered, and license-plated last time I knew) He lives in Colorado though, where anything goes. It's a full-blown competition buggy he can drive to work if he wants to.

I think if you had turn signals, a horn, fenders and mudflaps you'd be OK? You've just got to pass safety inspection.

I think you'd need mirrors too.... it's very doable though, just make sure you call it a dune buggy instead of a rock buggy... they've been established for a long time and it should make things go more smoothly

Windshield. Wipers. Front and rear bumpers. Gotta pass emissions. Full-hydraulic steering and beadlocks are arguably problems too.

Nah, that was the old one... this new one he built looks a lot like the old one because he liked how the other one performed, but see that one tab there? it's different... oh and it's a different color. Where's the old one? It got cut up for scrap metal.

Do you have to have a windshield? I know if you do, it can't be cracked, etc. But I remember when I did Utah inspections 100 years ago, there was nothing that said you had to have one. I found that hilarious....

Do you still have to have operable wipers and washers if you have no windshield?

You used to, yes! That's what made it all so funny!! You had to have wipers, but no windshield. But if you did have a windshield, it had to be in good repair. It was very funny to say the least....

Daily driver that will do 4+. My first priority was keeping it legal. Second I wanted something I could take on 4+ (not 5) trails in Moab and take camping in the mountains all while being reasonaly comfortable. It works pretty well.
