A few updates from the last week and a half.
Put down tube for radiant heat. Left a section down the middle for the ability to bolt into the floor - lift, tube bender, etc.

Put the finishing touches on my work benches finally. I've only had the benches built for about three months now and finally got around to finishing them by fabricating doors for the two large compartments.

Painted them using the same Rustoleum Hammered paint that I used on the benches themselves.

Enclosed the side first then moved onto sheeting the doors.

The 16-gauge aluminum measured and marked for cutting.

After cutting to size and deburring I marked out a line 4” in from the perimeter to add a small kustom touch.

Dug out the bead roller and installed the step dies.

I think it gives the doors a bit of dimension.

I picked up some inexpensive small tapered brushed finish handles a few weeks ago. I thought these would be low profile enough to not catch on my shop apron while working at the bench.

I think they finish off the work benches quite nicely.

Thank you. It has taken a lot of years to acquire all of the tools to pretty much do ANYTHING I need to in my own shop. Feels pretty good to be able to walk out in the backyard and have everything I need at my disposal. I am very blessed.

Oooooooh, a bead roller. I think I'd go crazy with one of those. Nice work.

Yeah, the bead roller is something that is great to have but I don't use it nearly as much as I did when I was racing or building sandrails. Like most tools that don't get used on a regular basis, it's hard to look at them when they are sitting there not being used.

I've wanted a hitch carrier for awhile, have seen them pop up for sale for around $50-60 used but they always sell before I get to them! New they're around $140-150... I'm sure their's a Harbor Freight version that's 1/2 the price, but it would probably last a year or less. I had some material laying around and find myself with plenty of time on my hands recently, so I went to work. The actual fab work took about 3 hrs and I probably have $60-70 into it.... and I know it'll last a long time! It feels like it weighs around 20-25#'s, not too bad IMO. I may add a couple more tie downs on the ends.

I was going to add a raised rail 2-3" high, but I don't want to add any more weight... maybe tomorrow. I'll get it painted tomorrow too, then toss some reflective tape on the back end.

Finally pulled my bender out of the box after a year and rebuilt an old engine stand into a bender stand. Still have a couple parts coming from Swag and a longer hose for the foot pedal to install.

I had a lot of help and great weather on Friday and Saturday.

I've had the idea of fabricating an axle stand or fixture for many years now, mainly from back when I was racing and building street rods. However, over the past 5 or 6 years now of building Jeep axles, it has resurfaced. I am tired of wresting axles around on my welding table so I wanted something to securely hold the axle while working on it yet small enough to not take up a lot of space for storage. If I did more axles I could probably justify a sawhorse style mobile cart but seeing as how I only build about 6 or so axles a year I am just not ready to have a cart of that size eat up that much space to store. I settled on an adapter style that will bolt to my geared head engine stand and could be easily hung on the wall when not in use.

This is my version or what I came up with. I figured maybe someone on here may find it interesting and want to incorporate it into your own workshop.

This is the best kind of project, one that I already had material for so no $$$ out of pocket.:D I dug through my metal supply rack and was able to locate everything I needed.

I started with the adapter that will bolt to the engine stand.

Next I started on the arms that will come out from the stand. I cut recesses into them and filled those with some 4”x .250” wall tube that will support the axle and have the other have of the tube hinge over and pin.

I then machined the remaining components for the hinges and clasps for the arms of my axle stand.

I then machined the threaded bungs for the lock down bolts. Decided to use my weld positioner to weld the bungs in place.

I think I may cut some thin rubber and glue it to the saddles where the axle will sit.

Your axle stand is a WAY NICER version of what I use regularly. Mine's just cobbled together.

One question though, how will you deal with the huge range of axle tube sizes? I have a couple different clamp pieces in differing sizes, along with a spacer for my saddle part I have to use sometimes....since I've had to deal with anywhere from 2.25" to 4" diameter tubes.

The grade 8 bolts in the center of the clamps should hold the axle tight against the bottom side of the valley, if the tube is too small to reach with the bolts in there he could put longer bolts in.
