What do I get for the next bike?

You should get an in-tank pre-filter. FI bikes are a different game, you need to make sure you filter your fuel big time otherwise you will end up with a clogged system. Most KTM guys will also put another filter after the tank.

In my experience when you need to adjust valves on a yamaha, a new motor is most likely in the very near future.

You're on the same wavelength as me. I'm going to get a in-tank sock style one.

I thought, while I'm at it. I better clean the injector. So out came the airbox.

And it's all clean. I basically just followed the how-to on a Youtube video for a KTM, but injectors are so similar that it worked just fine.
It was actually quite clean.

I'm mostly concerned about what the plug is telling me. It seems it's running rich. Which explains why fuel consumption has been so high in these races.
It likely is a function of the clogged filter. The fuel system thinks it's running lean and dumps extra fuel which may explain the black plug.

Is one chart I used

With all the extra stuff, it's still better than rejetting every time I ride at a different elevation.

I know what you're saying and I agree, I've ridden over 12k' elevation without issue in that regard. The 690 has had some EFI/Ethanol-related running issues that have kept me from riding and I'm getting tired of it. I'm OK with dealing with a carb, after my EFI problems.

I could see that as a big issue. Corn is in almost all gas now.

The biggest benefit I can see is the smooth transition from part to full throttle during climbs. There just is no hiccup at all. It's just power whenever I want it....
Even if I'm 2 hours into a race and the bike is trying to kill me...

$69 with 2 day free shipping sounds a heck of a lot better than $400 from Yamaha.

I just hope it is correct.

Good article. I have been claiming the same thing my whole life.. I just don't have the resources to prove it :)

Of course it does compare CC's. Nobody buys a 250f and expects it to compete with a 450f. The 2T's are expected to run with the 450f's. It would be interesting to see the same shootout with a 2t and 450f.

That is a great article. I like how objective they are about each bike and how you perceive results that may actually be different. I also learned that I like 4 strokes because it is an idiot proof ride

So, I reassembled the top end on my bike today.
Added a new E3 spark plug.

Just a part # for my own reference.

Cleaned the inside of the fuel pump
Brand new lifetime warranty fuel pump

Filter is significantly larger on the new pump.

Reassembled everything and it started and ran so I guess I did it right.
Then I readjusted the free-play gain on the Rekluse and rode it a bit.
I'll have to go on a test ride this week, and probably will slap on a new tire for the Firebird's race
