What do you coat your "for sure getting scratched stuff" with? Just rattle can it? Does it really matter to acid etch bare metel before you paint it? Rattle can is nice because it is an easy touch up and doesn't look bad either. I went on the Rubicon last summer in a Mog that had a sweet custom winch bumper that was linexed. The line X got hammered pretty good in some spots and had to be taken back to the place that did it to get redone. Thats not what I want to do every time I get a scratche on my bumper.

Just woundering what ideas there are out there?

I plan on painting my bumper in Hammered finished Rustoleum. The light "hammered" texture helps hide some of the imperfections in the metal work, as well as any deep scratches. It is spray on, and pretty durable. It is also designed to allow it to be sprayed over rust, so if you have a little on the scratch it isn't a big deal.

Other than that I would do Herculiner. It is pricey, but if you can find a good way to keep the pain from drying out a quart should last a few coats on the bumper.

Let's see I've tried the Hammered finished Rustoleum. It fair well at all. In fact I got rust rather quickly on paryts that don't even make contact with anything. I currently have it Rhino lined. Very big expensive mistake. It peeled off on the first rock that I had. I have used the spray on bedliner stuff. can't think of the name of it. It did the best of the three. I would say though that the roll on do it yourself bedliner (Herculiner) seems to hold up the best. there are two folks in our club that have it and it still looks good. If you don't go with that then go with just the rattle can but you have to use a self etching primer on bare metal (I have some experience at auto body, not an expert by no means).

I just did mine with the black "wrinkle" finish Krylon. Turned out pretty nice, and the textured finish tends to hide imperfections underneath.
