I'm looking for some targets for plinking with my 22 handguns and my 9mm. What do you guys use? I'd like something I can hear when I hit it.

I have some old used little green propane cans, but those don't seem like a smart idea. THey seem like they could explode. I don't want anything unsafe.

I just fill a card board box up with dirt, print off some bullseye targets, tape them on the box and your good to go.

If your going to be shooting at a hundred yards or more it is fun to shoot at an old piece of steel painted with a light color so you can here it hit and see the mark on the light paint.

I usually use my own that I print off on card stock, pretty cheap that way. But something you can hear? Maybe back up a target with some thin sheet metal, like used HVAC ducts, or similar.

I google "printable targets" and print them off. I also like the spinning steel targets you can get for 20 bucks at sprotsmans, cabellas, etc.

The propane bottles won't explode.

Correct, they won't...it was a big let down when we found that out :D

Usually I use clay pigeons. They are bright enough to see clearly from a distance and it's very easy to see when you've hit your target.

You can make the propane bottles explode if you put some fire near/around them when you shoot them. ;)

I use laminted glass. It is really fun too shoot cause it makes a big hole and lots of cracks when hit.
My only issue with that is one of my biggest pet peeves is when people leave junk behind when they shoot. So as long as the lamination can hold it all together, that would be fun. That's also why I like clay pigeons, give it a week or two and the remnants of them are gone.

I've thought about building something like this...should be fun for smaller calibers.

That's not too bad, even for higher calibers it would probably work (as long as you aren't blowing through the steel). You can buy the shooting range steel targets that have 4-5 targets, and when they all fall, you have a final target that resets them all. I've thought about buying one of those, they aren't too pricey.

Or a flare on the ground, or use a hot tracer round :D

I take a big cardboard box, a pack of cheap paper targets from Sportsmans or the like and some duck tape. Throw some rocks in the box, tape up a target and shoot away. The box, even when full of holes, makes a great garbage can when your done.

Remember not to leave your home on the range:

That is just one of the recent Tread Lightly posters campaigning against 'Target Trash'. I think dumping in the desert is a far bigger immediate threat to mother nature than OHV's.

My favorite targets are paper cups filled with water. They explode when hit but are cheap and easy to clean up. Use different size of cups for different firearms or ranges. Remember to bring a few gallons of water.
