There r so many options I am just wondering what people have tried that did not work or did that worked great .I thought about a power inverter and a 110 compressor or a cheap harbor freight 12 v hard wired maybe two or three. I have the spot for a air conditioning compressor one also .But I love a/c .Just looking for ideas and thoughts. Thanks

Any good electric air compressor is going to require a heavy duty electrical system. If you already have that and an invertor I don't see why a buying a cheap 110v is not a good idea. It is not efficient to convert from 12v to 110v but if you already have a high output alt and an invertor it is probably the cheapest way to go. If you don't have a heavy duty alt and invertor a belt driven york will probably be your cheapest bet. Other than that a high output 12v compressor will require over 100 amps and be pretty pricey. Oasis makes a kick ass unit but pulls over 100 amps, so you will probably still need an upgraded electrical system.

I made this and didn't proceed with it, it was heavy, loud, and only went to about 100psi. It could have been mounted in a pick up bed, or to a big bumper or something.

I stuffed a belt driven york under the hood of my xj with 2 batteries and kept the a/c. (post #1)

The low rider community has spawned some decent 12v compressors as well.

I run a Viar 450C with a 3gal tank on my Superduty. pricey, but nice. I mounted it underneath on the frame. It has been there for years. I got for free from a guy that could not get it to run. The internal pressure regulator was faulty. Put on an external control and bypassed the internal.

This is what I did:

Search around, this same compressor is available in a 12V version. It's served me well so far.

This is exactly what BC is referring too:

Just curious, have you had any issues with the 450C being under the hood?

I had the same set up as your's on my last Jeep, and issues with engine heat. On summer days, say in Moab, my compressor wouldn't start due to it sensing it was overheated. I finally had to disassemble the compressor and remove the thermal switch to make it operable during warm weather.

To avoid this hassle, I just mounted it all in the cargo area on this Jeep.

I ran this for about four years:

It's a pair of cheap MV50's powered by an 85 amp continous duty solenoid, with a manifold, pressure switch, tank mounted under the tub and quick disconnects mounted on the rear bumper and inside each door. I got the MV50's for $30 each and between the two of them, they put out a decent flow (each rated 2.5 CFM at 0 psi). And of course, having two of them gave redundancy. Which, eventually, started coming in handy as one of the compressors started getting flakey.

Once the one compressor started giving me too much trouble, I ended up replacing both of them with just the Puma 12V mentioned in this thread a couple times already. It's a MUCH higher quality piece of gear, great bang for the buck in my opinion, and it fills my tires as fast or faster than the two smaller, cheaper units it replaced.

So, long winded way of saying, if doing it all over, I'd just do the Puma right out of the gate. Good piece of equipment, fairly priced. The cheapest place I found for the 12v unit new, was Buzzard Gulch. I think I paid $180 for mine. Their website and online catalog totally suck azz, impossible to find anything, I'd just call them and ask for the 12V Puma compressor, it's part # NCPD-1006.

Not exactly. ;) See the Puma model above, this is exactly the one I'm using and it's served me well. Got it from the Buzzard guys as well. As cheap as they are, I figured I could go through a few of them and still be money ahead comparred to the cost of a Viair.

Never had an issue with heat soak yet. Been using it for 4 years in varied temperatures.
