Personally I wouldn't give more than $500 for that vehicle. But the demand for them is quite high compared to the supply. So the current owner might not like an offer like that. The question I think you need to answer is how bad do you want an FJ-40? Once you've answered that you'll have a better idea of what this one would be worth to you.

Agreed and Agreed. I would not think it to be of that great value, so, start low. Secondly, if you really want it, then I guess he has you in his pocket, and you will pay whatever he asks for it (so to speak).

Good Luck!

I hate rust on things I want to invest money into. That being said, I wouldn't give very much for it either, he is probably seeing fully restored ones going for 40K$ in the trader and he thinks his is frickin gold plated underneath that rust...I wouldn't do it!!

My first cruiser was stock except for 31" tires and longer shackles. Everything was in working order, and there was very minimal rust. Nothing was rusted through, it was only surface rust. I paid $1500 bucks.

I would never buy a vehicle that is in the shape you are describing, unless it is nearly free. There are decent cruisers for cheap, you just have to be patient.

The cruiser I have now was stock as far as suspension, but it had the V-8 conversion as well as power steering. The body was in perfect shape. I paid $4700 for it, and it has been worth every penny.
