Thinking about buying a lap top computer and need some guidance. I figure a 15" to 17", 3-4 meg ram, 250 gig memory, CD/DVD r/w, windows vista changeable to 7 when it comes out, need word/excel. Have seen prices all the way from $444 to $1200. Toshiba, Dell, and HP are the ones I have looked at. Will be used for U4WDA business, family history, quicken, and e-mail, no games. Any suggestions???

If you wait another 12 days you can just get it with the public version of Win7 and not have to worry about upgrading after.

Win7 is worth it's hype... I've been running it for a couple months now (MSDN). I love it.

You can't go wrong customizing a laptop online, but you might be happy with local support from people like Cruiser and Stephen.

Jack, if you're looking for something cheap and decent, there aren't many deals better than http://www.dell.com.

For a local company who puts together a great laptop and will provide great support, go to PC Laptops (http://www.pclaptops.com). As mentioned, "cruiser" on this board works there and can help you find what you need. Personally, I chose PC Laptops the last time I needed a new computer for myself, and I've been nothing but satisfied with their product and their service. A great company to do business with.

It's about time for me to trade-in and get something new. :)

Made the decision, got a Dell Inspiron 1545, 15.4", Pentium dual core, T4200 @ 2ghz, 4.0 ram, 64bit sys., 250 gig memory, has Vista with free update to 7, Office Home and Student installed, dvd r/w drive, 2 yr warr., $624 + tax at Costco. I want to think everyone that helped on this.

Is an ASUS any good? I have been told they rank #2 behind Apple for customer satisfaction. I have always bought Dells and I am in need of a new laptop, pronto.

I know this is a little late but...

My boss just got a new laptop that has the LED (not LCD) screen. He said the battery life is WAY longer. (LED's use hardly any power)

My next laptop will have a LED screen. :p

I'm pretty sure most nice laptops have LED displays anymore. Yes, as long as it's a good LED panel, the battery life is a bit better and the colors are far brighter and more vibrant.
