What overall gear ratio do you like to run?

With portals you gotta have options, I run a NV4500 with lower 1st gear and Atlas 4 speed (39-42"tires).
I really like having a SUPER low gear ratio with the manual, it gives me nimble manouvering in the extreme stuff without stalling it out no matter what.
My top speed so far was 60mp up in Kamas and my driveshafts were not happy!!!

---Portal---
R&P 3.54:1
Portal box reduction 2.13:1
Final axle drive ratio 7.56:1

---Final Crawl Ratio---
HiHi 48:1
Hi 96:1
Lo 130:1
LoLo 260:1

---2nd Gear Crawl Ratio---
HiHi 26:1
Hi 52:1
Lo 70:1
LoLo 144:1

^^ your tallest gear is almost like most people's lowest gear. at 48:1

i bet it crawls nicely.

but "dual purpose" and your rig probably never occupy the same sentence

Very true, little fact is my rig was plated & street legal in AZ... it drove to the trails from Mesa. Unimogs typically have lots of gearing options...even as many as 20 gears to make them uniniversal in both situations. Although most would agree that portals of any sort are not typical in DD rigs (except h1's) because of heat build up. (although a Jeep FC101 concept did debut with portal at ejs 2012 also).

My specif limititations on gearing personally is def the low HP 6 cylindar 4.0L and the high axle ratio of 7.56, but with 0.73 as the 5th gear overdrive my final cruise ratio of 5.52:1 is half way decent to do 60+mph.
Im following a few 404 portals builds over on pirate that are 400hp V8 and 9" centers (givin them a 5.5 final axle ratio) cruising a cool 100mph+ in the desert!!!

This car was the first to finish in the inaugural KOH race. (bronco guys always love this)

Since more gearing talk has taken place. Does anyone have experience with Stak Monsters in full size rigs? I have thought long and hard on how to get gearing I want. I want my truck to be a epedition vehicle eventually but want wide gear hselection. That's why I'm asking about the Stak. Atlas gave me very very los and then high numbers. I have a NV4500 and thinking of 4.88s, 37s, Dana 60s, and 5.44 Stak. What do you guys think?

I have a 4banger YJ, and that means lots of gearing. More options are better. This thing is not for the street as top speed is about 60 and that could have something to do with unbalanced krawlers on beadlocks.
Stock engine, AX5, Klune V 2:72:1, stock tcase with 4:1 and 5.38 axle gears translate to over 200:1. And this is quite adequate for this jeep. in double low it will crawl anything without killing the engine but 4:1 is fine for most everything. Not saying i like this engine--i hate it and how does the saying go...i would love to have a V8 :)

Hey Machrism do you wheel down in las cruces? i have run most of the trails down there and they are awesome. always in danger of being closed down though sadly.

Well I don't have lockers so alot of crawling or soft sands hills don't do well. Just everything else. Done mostly rocky trails but once boulders show up. I stop. Offroad quite abit off trans mountain and border highway though in the lava fields. Guzmans peak and Kilburns Hole. Yes. My truck made it out with no lockers or posi. My truck is still there in LC but currently live in Midland, TX.

I'm rebumping this because I'd like some input.

Currently my setup (meaning all the parts I've got, not yet assembled) is at 97.27:1. In a Samurai, that's pretty good. However, I've got a line on a Rockblock (almost a doubler) which could put me at 175.09:1. My question is, the rig being a 50/50 street/trail rig would you advise for or against going with the doubler?

The Samurai is being built stout enough to handle the various Utah terrains. If 175:1 is too much, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks, folks.

No such thing as too low if you have options the rock block has oiling issues at speeds doesn't it?

with that set up low low 2nd and 3rd would be great climbing gears

if low low is too low just run low..
