what was the first thing you broke on your hp30 besides axle shafts or u-joints?

I'm just curious what you guys have bent or broken on an hp30 besides axle shafts or u-joints? I will be taking the Jeep to Moab in 2 weeks for its first real test with the 35's under it and am debating on having some gussets added for extra strength. I have spare shafts and u-joints so I have that covered, but am not a throttle junkie and should be fine anyway. What else should I "worry" about?

I went through unit bearings regularly. With 33s and a lockright, I never broke a shaft or u-joint, only failure was losing two caps on a u-joint. Even then, I went up Pritchet to rocker knocker and back with the bad u-joint. I was mighty proud of my D30. It was a YJ, btw.

Keep a light foot and don't back up a hill while you are turned sharp and you should be fine. The only thing I have had fail on my D30 is the ears on the axles stretching causing the ujoint to come loose and lose a cap. Then BOOM! Unit bearings and ball joints have worn out quicker as well. My TJ is on 35's.

Yeah, all that weight plus the sharp steering angle would definitely cause an issue. I'm hoping with the v8 that I will be using the gas pedal even less than my other Jeep with the 4.0.

I never had a problem with my Dana 30 and I ran 37's and a lock right for 1.5 years in my lj. The 44 had issues though.

Right now I am saving up for an Ox Locker, so if I do need to make a sharp turn in a high traction situation it will put less stress on the axle. I was going to throw in a Spartan but selectable is much better. What was happening with your 44?

I'm not sure where all the problems stemmed from but all the bolts that hold a Detroit together came out. So I had 8 huge explosions randomly over 6 months. The 8th one was the grand finale. It was louder than the rest and the jeep stopped moving for good. So I had new gears and everything installed then did a lock right a few months later. Something started slipping a while later but I just thought it was the lock right releasing and clicking. Never thought anything of it, until I sold it. The kid that bought it said there was something like 12-15 teeth missing off the gears. Strange!

Super 30 kit with CTM's and 4.56 gears. Never experienced a problem running 37's.
Didn't drive it enough to go through unit bearings either.

Send from my mobile thingy. Never while driving though.

Never broke a unit bearing or r&p. Did go through a few u-joints and stock shafts, mostly short side. The stock lca brackets are weak. You can simply weld a piece of metal to the bottom of the bracket to reinforce it.

The LCA mounts are boxed in on both Jeeps so I don't have to worry there. The front is a 3 link setup with upgraded steering and 4.56's in the axles, about the only street miles it sees are to the trail.
