one small mod at a time
I have no speakers on my computer so I didn't follow the vid link, does that show that its powered by the diesel that came from the Unimog it stole its axles from?

Very cool.... Watche a you tube on a better computer that showed the young guy from TopGear getting to drive it... Impressive.

Drove a smart, across Anaheim Mannheim, and then on/off my trailer... you can keep 'em, Extremely Underwhelmed.

Did anyone else read the "Most Bang for the Buck" article in the newest Consumer Reports? The "Smart" car was the lowest bang for the buck amongst all small cars. The report divided road test scores with the 5-year cost to own. So although the Smart is cheap to buy, and relatively cheap to drive (fairly good mileage, but only runs on premium), it's terrible road test score gives it a high "bucks per bang" ratio (lower is better). They rated it at $895 bucks per bang, compared to the Honda Civic which led the class at $340 bucks per bang.

Interestingly, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited was rated at $2,320 bucks per bang, and the Hummer H2 was $3,620 bucks per bang.

Smart cars have been all over Europe for years (at least Germany) and the only redeeming value I could see was that you could 90* park a Smart car when everyone else had to parallel park.

Try parking in a big city and you'll understand. SLC does not count.

I wouldn't buy one, but they do make great speed bumps.

One of the really nice things about the smart, when it came out with this model ten years ago, was that they got twenty-five MPG, which was amazing back then. The bad thing is that they have never changed anything, so it still gets about twenty-five MPG. A toyota corolla does that good, so why bother?

Though, I must admit, if those body kits are really out there, then THAT becomes very tempting! It would just be funny as heck!

Another interesting thing is that all of the painted surfaces are plastic, and you can pop them off in about an hour. In Europe people will meet random strangers in the park and want to trade paint colors, and do so. Funny. The cops here would not like that much though, given that the paint color is in the License Plate info.

BINGO! I have never understood the smart fad. Poor MPG, no storage/seating whatsoever. The only thing they have going for them is safety. Their egg shell or whatever it is can take a beating.

One time I did see a pretty sweet smart, however. It was a convertible with half doors, and the windshield folded down. I have a picture somewhere that I'd have to scan in, but it was pretty cool.

THey make good sense in a city, where maneuverability and parking are key. I wouldn't like to drive one of those faster than say... 45mph LOL and hell if I'd be at all comfortable amid anything bigger than that.

I rented a Kia Spectra for the last week, it was small, nimble, had a trunk, did at least 90mph, and got 30+mpg. And they're cheaper than SmartCars.
