So I am building a new shop on my property and I have to move about 25 good size boulders during the excavation. I am excited about the shop. 40x75 with 15' side walls. Anyway, I have a drainage area that is about 100 yards long. There is a pretty good pile of Larger Granite boulders in the middle of this area. I was thinking of having the dirt guys pile all the excavated dirt down there and then lay all the 25-30 larger boulders to make a little fun run for me. I was also thinking of possibly building a couple waterfall type areas there as well out of sprayed cement. I am not sure what would be the most fun. I have access to a bunch more 100+ medium sized boulders also. It is very short but I was thinking of drilling all the big ones and then putting anchors in them so that I could move them to try new things. Anyone have any good ideas how they would set it up?

After reading your post I started to get jealous of your plans. I have thought about this very same thing. I have given it some thought and had decided that I would want all the boulders to be loose. The reason is I would want to try and duplicate the things I may encounter in the real world. Rocks move and after each vehicle goes through the course changes. I was honored to get the chance to attend Top Truck Challenge last year and watched as the judges worked their ideas into a tough course. None of the rocks at the Mini Rubicon were anchored. This way everyone had to work with the course presented to them.

I love your plans and think you're on the right track. It is almost impossible to say how to lay out rocks like that without actually seeing the terrain and the rocks available. You almost have to start laying them down and see what you get, then go from there. Different people see different things. I'd bet you could lay down a course and find some great lines and run them for a while and someone new could show up and find another line or two that you hadn't seen yet.

I guess what I was thinking and did not express very well is that if anyone had a few features that would be a cool deal to have, I was thinking of more permanent ones that I could make out of sprayed Cement like a few water falls and stuff that is what I would like information on. I am leaving the big rocks loose and also making it so they can be moved with a backhoe if I wanted to change it up a bit.

Build another mini moab.... only this time replicate some of the most extreme obstacles, that way when you go and do the real thing it will be a cinch!
