whats stronger xj 44 or a ford 8.8

just trying to figure out what is stronger a 87 xj d44 or a ford 8.8 out of a mid 80's mercury grand marquis

I would go 44, no c clips. I doubt your 88 grand axle had disc brakes like a newer explorer one, so brakes are a wash. Plus if it''s going in that cherokee, just bolt in the 44

Then the only thing that will really chage anything is what tire size in the future and if your going to keep it street legal. If around 35's and yes then your good

Depends on how you drive it. I've seen people running XJ D44's with 37's. You just have to remember what's under your rig.

It really depends on how you drive it. That's a wide tire and aggressive. I think that Herzog run's SX's, but narrower? Maybe he can chime in one how it was when his rig had a body

I wasn't very nice to my XJ D44. Never had a problem (ARB, 4.88s and 35" MT/Rs). I know I used up at least two non-disco D30s (bent housings) while I had the XJ 44. I'd run another with 35" tires.

The 8.8 is probably stronger, but I would rather have the 44. I really hate the idea of bearings riding right on the shaft.
