it's a timer that goes off when you hit a certain amount of miles, and tells (or recomends) you when to change your o2 sensor. on the older jeeps like ours the 87 to 90 gorup, you can not reset them. just unplug it if the light goes off, and call it good.

on the newer ones you can reset them some how.

yeah thats all it is, i think they just want to get more money out of us by having a timmer to tell us when to change our 100 dollar o2 sensors.

Where is this thang located? My bro's jeep had the light go on and it'd be nice to see if this is why.

Underneath the bottom of part of the dash on the left side...I think that it's screwed on, so it's easiest to just undo the whole lower dash panel. After that, it's that clear box with all the litte white gears in it

Well, its not really the case of it being a timer with a light instead of a sensor. Most newer cars have this setup, not just jeeps. O2 sensors do wear out, usually after about 60,000 miles. The light automatically goes off after about that many miles to tell you that your sensor needs to be replaced. On most cars you can reset this light with a code reader. A bad O2 sensor can cause really poor gas mileage, sputtering, ruines your cat after time, causes you to fail emmisions tests.... etc. Basically the O2 sensor tells your computer if your air/fule mixture is too lean or too rich so the computer can adjust the fuel injection system to give a correct mixture. Many newer cars use at least two sensors, I'm not sure about jeeps. Mine was replaced as part of a recall on the cat. converter, so its almost new so I've not worried about it.
