Where to camp in Moab?

I'm taking the girlfriend and some friends to Moab for their first time May 17-19. I have never camped while being down there, so I need your advise on good places to stay.
We plan to ride dirt bikes, mountain bikes and do some scenic drives in the tow rig. I'm bringing the little one so wherever we end up needs to be good for her to run around.
After deciding in these dates I realized that rally on the rocks, and Wiley's overland are that same weekend, so hopefully I can find a place. How bad does it usually get for those events?

Are you planning on staying in a campground around town? IMO, stay away from the campgrounds/RV parks in the valley, the mosquitos can get bad. If you grab a site up on the hill south of town you should be ok though. If you're planning on roughing it, there's decent half-civilized camping up on Sand Hollow and out east and west on the Colorado.

If you go down Kane Creek Rd there is open BLM camping. No fees, and they have some outhouses through out. It's about 5 miles in on the dirt road or so.. A ways past the entrance to Cliff hanger.

there is an intersection Aprox 13 miles south of Moab on US-191. you have two options to choose from at that point...

"behind the rocks" if ya head West.

"Area BFE" if ya head East via Pole Canyon Road.

Both are pretty easy drives and offer plenty of good places to camp... If ya hit area BFE there is lots of cool exporing close and rock formations to drive on as well as a donation booth to help support an area that was privately bought for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors!

We spent a week back in this area, and really enjoyed it. There are no restrooms available, and you have to "pack out" all human waste..

There are some pretty places off this road, like picture frame arch..

In addiditon to those places there are campsites along Potash road(Just north of the bridge), Kane Creek Road(turn at McDonalds),along 128(right at the bridge heading east) there are improved campsites right along the river in a few places, and there are many many improved campsites along sand flats road that are right in the fins & things, slickrock trail, and hells revenge vicinity. Based on your description I would aim for sand flats campgrounds. You can do everything your planning right from camp and your only 5-10 min from town.

Thanks for the input guys. Any input on how hard it will be to find a spot with those two events happening at the same time?

We had great pickings last year during the rally on the rocks at the spots off of the picture frame arch road...And for Easter the last 2 years we have had easy pickins down kane creek rd.
