i've got some $ the wifey doesn't know about. But she has this incredible built in radar and i suspect she'll find it and spend it on shoes. So maybe before that happens, does anyone know where i can find some portal (mog) axles drivers drop? I don't mind the 404s since this won't be competition or anything.
Tibus used to have a warehouse in Utah but their website is all german again so i suspect they are gone from Utah...?
Price is a consideration so if these are too much $$$ then i'll probably go the D60 route.
thanks for anyones help in advance.

The guys at Portal-Tek have been working on building their axles in the same price range as a fully-built Dana 60 from Dynatrac, Solid Axle, etc. So that might give you an idea price-wise.

I'd call up the guys at Portal-Tek, especially since their local. Ask them about Mog and Volvo portals, they have plenty of experience with both and can tell you more than you'll ever find out on your own. Their custom axles have been built to address the weak areas of both factory axles.

Have you seen this thread, may be some useful info for you-

A company named Exaxt 4WD sells Unimogs. I have spoken with them a few times and they seem to know what they are talking about. Link http://www.exaxt.ca/

I called and e-mailed Portal Tek around 10 times to get info on their axles when I was building a crawler about a year ago. They never returned any of my calls or e-mails. Maybe you will have better luck than I did.

Here are a couple of links for a company in Texas that sells on e-bay.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Unim...62QQcategoryZ33728QQihZ022QQitemZ350092112002

Thanks for the replies. Portal-tek guys were nice on the phone. I don't have 12 grand to dump on axles. Good shameless plug though!

Hit up Crinco, I know at one time he has some 404's for sale. Not sure if he still does

Tibus has kind of disappeared. He was on M715zone.com when I was over there all the time, and then POOF! nothing. I think the Turks got him. :D

There are portals for sale on Pirate usually, I'm assuming you've searched the sale forums there???

Also, for what it's worth, converting the brakes and torque tubes on Mog axles (and Volvos too, IIRC) is almost as much as a 60/14bolt.

greg is definately right. the G3's are very comparable in price to a set of bult 60's. and you get a lot more strength and are great for uses not limited to rock crawling, -rockracing and expedition etc. they are really great for expedition because they are built strong to last and even doing maintenence in a small town with one parts store is easy because all the seals, bearings etc are common and easy to find parts.

Rondo- its been a long and busy road for R&D so i apologize for your inconvenience. try calling Russ @ 801-550-8841 if he doesnt get back, chances are he's still busy, if so give me a call @ 801-663-1700 and ill get ya in touch with one of the guys
Thanks, Jeff

sorry i missed your post bout talking to us , but in any case, do consider the price comparison on what you'll spend on 60's, or mogs or volvos and the $$ you'll spend to get those to run well, stop well, seal well, etc

Jeff,
that wasn't me that missed portaltek on the phone and by email. I talked to them with one phone call and they were very informative and polite. I'm sure their axles are the best thing on the planet, and i wish i had some, but 12,000grand and up is for the pros, not for me. as for them being competitively priced, well ok, if you say so. i mean my entire jeep pile isn't worth that much.
