Where to live in Utah?

We are looking in the Provo area mainly because work should be easier to find in the larger areas. Hopefully we will be out at the end of the month to look around and to check out jobs. I work in the waste water field and will be checking out the facility in the area.
We are fed up with the mentality of the people out here, it just gets old. Are there any good areas where you don't need to smog your cars or would that be to far south? Utah just seems to be a good choice for us, it's a state that still has morals and values California is going going gone......

I'd be for lining up a job first, and then finding a good neighborhood close to it (but upwind :D )

I grew up on Portland, OR and always said that I'd never live in Utah (but had never visited). I went on a Mish and my folds moved to Alpine, Ut....go figure, so I came back to a state with every season and beautiful mountains to always look at out the back door and fell in love! (with the state, and with a pretty lady! I bought a house in Lehi, got married, and bought another house (bigger) 3 blocks from the old one, still in downtown Lehi. I absolutely love "old town Lehi!!" 5 minutes from Wal Mart, or absolutely any shopping you need, but still see 4 wheelers or tractors going the streets regularly, and I love it's central location! about 20 min. to either Provo or SLC, and about 20 min. to some of the best wheeling/camping/dirtbiking around!! (5 mile and AF canyon areas) I honestly don't know if I'll ever move out of this area! The people we bought this house from a year ago hadn't hardly locked the doors in the 10 years they lived here! People are down to earth and really friendly. (as you can see, I can't say enough about this place! When you're getting ready to come on up this way, PM me if you want, and I'll show you around this area, and I'm sure the RME crowd can get together and take your fam wheeling, if you need a little taste of that, too!!

I live in the eastern bench of Provo and plan to stay here for good. 15 minutes from Sundance and hiking, biking, fishing and off-roading all within minutes of my house. Smog is your issue though, no getting around it here. In the long run though that should be a relatively inexpensive fix rather than a long commute over the years. Check into our public transit though(UTA) if you wanted to live out of the Orem/Provo boundaries. I second the Midway/Heber notion. It would be rad to live up there, little farmland feel with the close proximity to either Provo or Park City.

Yep, to get out of smog inspection you'll need to go to Heber, Midway, Nephi, Mona, or a ways away from Utah County.

The smog thing isn't that big of a deal it's just a pain in my area. If you have an older car (gas or diesel) and it smokes even a little, someone calls our lovely 800 number and you get a letter to bring your car in for inspection, and you better have all the factory stuff under the hood no matter what year the car is. My biggest problem with California is the politics and the values of the majority of the people. I grew up in a small town about 45 minutes from the Rubicon, but even the small tows are getting bad. We have been looking at lots of states and Utah seems to be the best for me and my family.

Winter for me is usually snowy because we live on the bench. I only have to use 4wd in my neighborhood and two streets down it is clear of snow, but I love driving in the snow. Heber area will be worse as it is higher elevation and the canyon will be a sketch some days. February wasn't bad though as far as snow( I remember going mtn biking from my house and the trails were pretty clear). If I can remember right I shoveled the snow about 5 serious days, the others, by the time I got back from work the sun had taken care of it.

Im no expert on this matter, but in my opinion utah seems like a pretty good place to raise a family. particularly in the surrounding small towns.

i was amazed of how many kid-centric places and activities were available for family outings. the skateparks alone were like nothing id never seen before.

utah valley is kind of like the movie pleasantville:p

The best of the best in Utah county is Mapleton. It's just 6 miles south of Provo, and it has the best veiws in the valley. Also you can drive from Mapleton to Moab with out going through one red light. If you can afford the slight premium, Mapleton is well worth it. Other places named on this thread don't really compare in quality of community and families. But if you like trashy neighborhoods full of starter homes, prefab homes with long grass and apartment complexs then the other places named on this thread are for you.

Here's your what a Getto starter home gets you in Saratoga springs... (I don't have a back-yard neighbor if you don't include the cows).

We will be renting at first that way we can get a better feel for what would work for us.
Schools are very important, so we will be looking at that aspect also. What are areas to stay away from? Just out of curiosity, are there any good twisty back roads?

lower horsepower car that handles great and just drive its to its limits Then A high hours power car that you can't use on the street. Don't get me wrong I love high horsepower cars but its not as much fun if you can only use it on the track.
My cars of choice are old Datsun 510 and 240z I still have a 510 not sure if I will bring it or sell it I will probably thin out my collection if we move. From your experience
What ares have the least Californians? My concern if that many people from California are moving to Utah They will screw it up just like California Oregon and Washington.

We have looked at lots of states and Utah is at the top of our list we are a conservative family and its difficult in Ca to be conservative and try to distill those values in your kids when society is saying that you are wrong. If it give you an idea of how some of the areas are a friend of mine live in a middle to upper class neighborhood him and his wife have been married for about 15 years there youngest is 7
she is being picked on by kids at school because her mommy and daddy are married still and because she does not have any step parents. According to the school this is becoming normal. call me crazy but I cant let my child grow up in that environment
