Gangs are a problem in Sacramento even in the small towns and the surrounding foothills.
That's something that is only going to get worse. I really appreciate the information.

The way Spence makes it sound, they're rotten with them. The only guys here w/hand tattoos are the guys at the tattoo shop, and they're not gang tats.

If you are from any place outside of UT and maybe.. I don't know, South Dakota, the "gang problem" here is really not much of an issue. Yes, they exist, and yes, MS13 etc are on the increase, but it's not like there are shootouts on the corners. West Valley.. well, I'd go armed to West Valley hahahah but I have yet to be anywhere in UT that qualifies to my NY mind as "a bad neighborhood". YMMV!!

I grew up in Newark, NJ the murder capital of the US and I was the only white kid from horizon to horizon... I walk nowhere in UT in fear.

The only crime that has affected me in my whole life living in Provo has been when people steal stuff out of my jeep when the top is off. I know I am an easy target when my vehicle is open to the public but that is it. Recently in the last two years there has been people going through cars, nothing broken. The thing is the kids that are hooked on prescription pills go on a buzzed rampage looking for more, the last time the kid (17y.o.) entered two houses-doors unlocked- and took pills and stole a couple cars-also unlocked and keys left in them. When the cops finally came (they are understaffed), the ratio of cops to population is shocking here- the guy took to the back roads at full speed in a suburban and they finally had to shoot him a couple of times to slow his high. Long-story-short in my 28 years here... a stolen hoodie, and a non working cd player stolen from my vehicle and this kid that went through my center console is all I have to report for crime that has closely affected myself.

I don't want to sugar coat it, but Utah is not immune to these problems. Utah's gang issues are every bit as real as California's. Gang incidents are happening daily in Utah valley, but for the most part they do not offend on average citizens other than tagging. I hope it stays that way but I think that is an unreal expectation. Even though I live in Logan, I work out of Provo and I still very aware of what going in that area through weekly conversations with my coworkers who cover that area. Just last year I had a youth who home was shot at in 3 seperate drive by shootings over a months time.

Even here in isolated Cache Valley which is 2 north of Provo we have 6 very well developed gangs and Hyrum, a town of 5,000, is a hotbed for gang activity.

I think it is a very good idea to move into an apartment at first to get feel for the area, but don't get the cheapest apartment out there. There are alot of nice places to live in Utah Valley but if you work in Provo, you may want to look at Heber City and the surrounding communities. It's really nice up there and it's only a 20 minute commute. Heber has an amazing old fashion downtown.

You must live on the north or east side cause if you lived down by the Provo Town Center your Jeep would be decorated on a weekly basis:greg:

Yup NE side, agreed Southern Provo has it's areas. I am aware that if I did live near Provo Towne Center I would need to live life differently. Interesting how a ten minute drive can span so much diversity in neighborhoods. When looking to buy a home, southern Provo seemed to have the cheapest homes but I kept having to remind myself... Do I really want to live there? The answer is always no. But even in some neighborhoods near the PTC, I envy the cool neighbors that my friend has, super friendly.

There can be bad things found in every city in UT county, I agree with Crawlinbear about Lindon. I work there and it is a slower pace and pretty calm altogether. But a couple of months ago a woman was arrested for running a brothel and pimping out her daughter and granddaughter. Plus my neighbor in the "nicer" part of Provo is the guy that had stolen 20+ million in a ponzi scheme and spent in all on exotic cars, ordered a hit on a witness etc. You never know, but I agree with JL Rockies, it is no comparison to any major city as far as feeling safe.

Aren't smaller towns- from your experience targets for gangs maybe due to drug manufacturing and distributing? Every meth-head that I have met does their stuff in small rural towns then brings it to the larger cities for example, Ferron UT.

BTW, Last week in Hawaii I saw a funny bumper sticker:

Cook rice,
not ice

Most of the meth out here is made in the small back woods towns. We also have Mobil labs rolling down the road in motorhomes even labs in million dollar homes you can't get a way from it. Gangs are every ware but Utah is completely foreign to me I really appreciate the help in pinpointing the good and bad ares.

My house is one block from the street with the highest crime rate in Utah, and I've never had a problem.

Most of the gangs are peeps from CA though... or peeps CA welcome. I remember back in 07 some "gangsters" from Draper wanted to have issue over a parking spot. As I walked over to them they kept backing up and then eventually ran away.

Gangsters make me laugh... I see all of their movies.

I got a report that 15-20 cars were tagged in west valley last night. I expect that from west valley but stuff like this is taking place all along the wasatch front.

damn you! You see right through my ruse.

Seriously though. Some little f***er sprayed "Surenos" on the sidewalk all over the neighborhood. Am I going to freak out and gear up for war now? Uh, no. Why? Because the kids doing the tagging around here are wannabe gangsters, not real ones.
I repeat: the worst neighborhoods in UT might be bad, but there are many, MANY worse places to be in a bad neighborhood. They don't call it Happy Valley for nothin'. That's not discounting the growing gang problem, but let's not overstate the case. And yeah, I've been to the seminars too. Still not that worried about it.

and we agree:p

I don't own or feel the need to carry a weapon. Figure growing up around crime has helped me to identify and avoid a bad situation before it happens.

although, i did have some weapons when i lived in the hood and people were being shot and killed in my yard. i remedied that by getting a better job and moving. sold the guns
