I will have to try that .. It almost seems like you need 1 mounted on roof to see the obsticale and size of it then 1 low to show actually going over it

I guess it depends on the point of your video. If you just want a quick shot of you making it up an obstacle, and you're not going to edit it much, I like the GoPro sitting on a tripod (like your video above). As a viewer, it gives me a better idea of the obstacle and what your rig did to get up it. I'd much rather watch your video above than the same thing from underneath, or from the driver's view only.

If you're going for a longer video with a bit more work, try to tell a story. A variety of different shots and angles is always better than one single angle the entire time. I prefer windshield view for trips where I want to showcase the scenery, under-carriage shots are cool, and rear-facing is cool too. Be creative. Watch a lot of videos and make notes about what you like. POV is cool, but without changing the camera position, it gets stale to watch.

In this video, I tried to change the camera mounting position with every shot. It's not perfect, but it keeps it interesting. The downside is that it takes twice as long to do a trail when you're constantly stopping to re-position your camera.

In this video I did for LROR, I wasn't filming, so I could only use the footage I was given. Unfortunately the camera position didn't change at all, so it was tough to keep the shots interesting through the video. It still turned out fine, but it would have been cool if we'd had a few different views.

I shot this one with the GoPro on a tube clamp, mounted to a 4ft piece of EMT, which was strapped to the front bumper.

This one was filmed with the GoPro mounted on the lower drivers door, using a suction cup mount.

Tight trails like in Sand Hollow make a side mounted camera pretty vulnerable. I've scratched a lens on the GoPro case while bombing up a sandy wash at Sand Hollow, surprised that the camera stayed on the door as it whacked the brush pretty hard.

For hand holding, I made a 4ft extendion pole, that collapes to 2ft. This allows you to get closer to the action without getting in the way.

Cool ideas for servo controlled pan/tilt GoPro filming.

Cool videos xjeeper! I have a mount I put on a 6' piece of PVC that we just hold. It's pretty flexy. I'm going to try EMT next, that's a great idea. I like the idea of attaching it to the vehicle as well.

We used the pole mount a lot on this video:

Steve I think with 2 cameras you could edit in some short drivers view sections and make it pretty so you could see the climb from inside and outside ya know?

Exactly, that would be an awesome way to make it interesting. You could even do it with one camera, just do two takes. The secret to a great video is time and planning. If you're willing to plan each shot and film it multiple times, it'll look great. Then again, that kinda sucks the fun out of wheeling. Filming a great video isn't as fun as it looks, but the end result is cool. I go on trips to enjoy them. I just happen to film them when convenient as well. I could make my videos a lot better if 90% of my energy was focused on filming rather than driving and enjoying myself. But where's the fun in that? I wheel for me, not for my videos.

GoPros are cool, but I'm converted to my DSLR for video now. It's a lot trickier to use, but I can get much better footage with it. That being said, the GoPro isn't going anywhere. I'm excited for the Hero 4 that's supposed to come out next year. It's supposed to do something like 30 fps @4k and 120 fps@1080p.

heres a few I've toyed with... lots of fun in all sorts of configurations.

Don't mount it inside the windshield when planning to do rock crawling. You won't see a good view of flex. I did this before and was disappointed.

I mounted one to the truss on the rear axle of our 4437 car during the KOH LCQ this year. was pretty cool footage, but cracked the lens of the case with flying rocks.

I used my GoPro for the first time yesterday, decided to suction cup it to the side of my rear passenger door.. I like this spot for short-term but watching that tire too long makes me sick.
