Which would you choose?

I've been actually looking for a 4runner '96-'00, and I've found one that is about 100 miles away from me. It's a 2000 with 117,000 miles on it. It's got the 3.4 six. I haven't seen it in person yet, just pictures in an online ad. This yota is on its third owner and this guy has had it for about 4 and a half years. He's getting rid of it because he "bought a truck and can't justify keeping them both". He doesn't really do any hard-core fourwheeling in it, but has taken it camping and on dirt roads quite a few times. When asked if he has any service records he says, that for the most recent 100k service he does, including changing the timing belt and water pump etc.. I asked him how often he changed the oil and he said, "I try to change it about every 3000 miles."
So then there's a guy I know a little bit (the guy with the yota, I don't) who lives about 250 miles away who is selling his 1999 Pathfinder, that he's only put 70,000 miles on. He's the only person who has ever owned the vehicle and has all the service records and says that he has done all the service at the recommended intervals. This has the six cylinder engine also. This one is a 4x4 as well and this guy has used his a lot on dirt roads, to get to mountaineering and canyoneering spots, but also hasn't done a lot of hard-core four-wheeling. I'm really tempted by this one because of the low miles and the record-keeping, but my heart has been set on a Toyota for a long time, and I believe them to be a bit better as far as off-road stuff, but then again, I'm not going to be doing much hard-core stuff myself either, with this rig,not like Moab rock crawling or anything, but I will be doing some challenging stuff from time to time--and I will be using it a lot to explore and to get into hunting, fishing, and camping spots.
Anyway, which ever one I look at, or if it ends up being both, I will be having a mechanic check it out. But just off of the info I posted here, which do you think is the better vehicle?

I have a Tacoma with the 3.4 and I think it is one of the best engines out there, and with the timing belt just done, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as it all checks out and wasn't abused you should be fine. I think the toyota will have the most aftermarket support and may even come with a locker.

I may be biased but I would go for the toyota, and really 117,00 miles isn't very many for a 3.4. However, that being said, if you aren't confident in it then do what you need to.

I've got an 98 4runner with 200,000 miles on it and I've beat the living piss out of it the 50,000 miles that I've had. I haven't had any problems at all. I change the oil but it sometimes goes up to 5,000 miles between. It doesn't leak at all or burn any oil and with the stock e-locker it will get you a lot of places. I would have to stay go with the 4runner.

A 5VZFE is just breaking in at 120k, my older Tacoma is rocking at just about 200k these days, zero engine repairs. Timing belt and water pump at 90k and again at 180k. My current 5VZ is at 87k, she'll be getting her first water pump and timing belt as preventive maintainance this coming month as she nears 90k.

The Toyota, hands-down. We've owned 2 vehicles with the 3.4 and several other older & newer Toyotas and they've been great. There's a reason I've never owned a Nissan... :D

I'm probably one of Toyota's biggest fans, but I'd have to agree with Tacoma (I think I just threw up a little bit). While I think the Toyota may be a better built vehicle, buying from the original owner and knowing the history of the rig is worth a lot.

Uh... no, no I don't own a secret, pretty 1971 FJ40. Not me.

I would have answered "get the Toyota", but the sketchy history bugs me. :D

It doesn't seem sketchy or fishy to me... The only real service it needs is the Timing belt around 90k. Plus IIRC the tacoma owners manual recommends changing the oil every 5k miles so every 3k it should be good. I tend to do it every 3k anyways because it sees more off-road time...

I vote for the Toyota. :) Too bad you didn't see mine for sale a few months ago..

I just got into the hunt about three weeks ago. Yeah, if you see anything and want to run it by me, feel free to do so. This is what I'm looking for approximately: '96-99 4runner (I think the above Pathfinder is the only one I would consider unless I find another with the same parameters), low miles for the year, great shape, manual tranny, and the 3.4 engine.

I'd try to get either vehicle into a trusted mechanic (for anything Toyota I go to Divinity Auto - Used to be 'The Toy Store') and have them look it over. Most places have a pre-sale checklist to make sure that all systems are evaluated.

IMO, milage is apples to oranges when different makes and models are being compaired.

For instance, 100k on a Toyota 3.4 is equivenlant to 55k miles on a Jeep 4.0.

Flame on people ;)

I know. Someone else told me that the miles don't matter so much, it's how it's been taken care of anyway. Anyway, all things being equal I've been trying to find out how many miles people are driving their Pathfinders versus how many miles for 4runners. One thing's for sure: I've found a lot of 4runner owners claiming 270,000 and then some.
