I've been actually looking for a 4runner '96-'00, and I've found one that is about 100 miles away from me. It's a 2000 with 117,000 miles on it. It's got the 3.4 six. I haven't seen it in person yet, just pictures in an online ad. This yota is on its third owner and this guy has had it for about 4 and a half years. He's getting rid of it because he "bought a truck and can't justify keeping them both". He doesn't really do any hard-core fourwheeling in it, but has taken it camping and on dirt roads quite a few times. When asked if he has any service records he says, that for the most recent 100k service he does, including changing the timing belt and water pump etc.. I asked him how often he changed the oil and he said, "I try to change it about every 3000 miles."
So then there's a guy I know a little bit (the guy with the yota, I don't) who lives about 250 miles away who is selling his 1999 Pathfinder, that he's only put 70,000 miles on. He's the only person who has ever owned the vehicle and has all the service records and says that he has done all the service at the recommended intervals. This has the six cylinder engine also. This one is a 4x4 as well and this guy has used his a lot on dirt roads, to get to mountaineering and canyoneering spots, but also hasn't done a lot of hard-core four-wheeling. I'm really tempted by this one because of the low miles and the record-keeping, but my heart has been set on a Toyota for a long time, and I believe them to be a bit better as far as off-road stuff, but then again, I'm not going to be doing much hard-core stuff myself either, with this rig,not like Moab rock crawling or anything, but I will be doing some challenging stuff from time to time--and I will be using it a lot to explore and to get into hunting, fishing, and camping spots.
Anyway, which ever one I look at, or if it ends up being both, I will be having a mechanic check it out. But just off of the info I posted here, which do you think is the better vehicle?
