a co-worker of mine swears that a legislation just passed that closed the white rim, and schaffer's trail. he said that he was just in moab on saturday and there was even large "permanently closed" signs on gates across the trail.

this guy is a bit of a rabble-rouser, who believes anything he reads on the internet.

is there any truth to this claim?

i know that private clubs like to rent trails this time of year for private runs, but he says that wasn't the case on these

From their website:

Winter conditions exist.
Snowy conditions still exist on some park four-wheel-drive roads and hiking trails.

ISLAND IN THE SKY

Scenic Drive: open, clear and dry

Shafer Trail: closed (During the winter months, adverse weather conditions can prompt closure of the Shafer Trail at a moment's notice. Please contact the park at 435-719-2100 or 435-259-4712 to check road status before you begin your trip. If the Shafer Trail is impassable, visitors must use Hwy 279/Potash Road or the Mineral Bottom Road to access the White Rim Road. White Rim permits may be picked up at park headquarters in Moab (2282 Resource Blvd) Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Mineral Bottom: open, but there may be mud or ice in shady areas

White Rim Road: open and mostly dry except for the north side of Murphy Hogback, which still has some ice and snow, and the north side of Hardscrabble Hill which has a few puddles. Visitors travelling the west side of the White Rim Road should carry chains and be prepared for less-than-ideal road conditions.

i called island in the sky they (nice lady named paula) said that my co-worker was on crack (paraphrasing)

i asked my co-worker about it he said that there was a map in SUWA's website of all the areas that are being closed to "mechanized travel" in 2 weeks by some legislation. the map included white rim, and many other trails in moab. this is why he dropped everything and took last friday off to go down there and ride his motorcycle one last time. our boss who believes him is leaving in a couple days for his own "emergency-gotta ride it before it closes" trip.

when i asked him why the website, and rangers don't know about it he said "nobody knows about it, but on advrider.com everyone is freaking out......."

and yes i know that trails all over the country (even world) are closed annually for the winter. My exaggerating co-worker's claim that there was a sign that said "permanently closed" was what made me want to ask if there was something other than winter closure going on.

I remember that suwa thing from last year. I signed a thing fighting it and several company's that I like there products for were on the roster for the closure. So alot of people emailed them saying what the craps. So alot of them pulled out of it. Idk whatever came of it in the end though. Yet.

SUWA would love to permanently close those trails, but they haven't passed any laws yet. It's going to take more than letters and boycots for us to stop them, but you've gotta start somewhere.
