Who lives in Moab?

OK, posted this in chit chat, but got no real response, so I thought I'd try here:

So anyone on here live in Moab? It sounds like my company is moving me down there for 6-8 months to build a bank. I need a line on a house or 3bd. apartment to rent. Also, how much higher is the cost of living down there compared to the Salt Lake area? Seems like food and gas are quite a bit more when I go down wheeling...I'm guessing that utilities are kinda spendy too. Any input, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated, since I have to be moved down there within a month.

I bet cost of living is way less down there.

From what I've looked at it's just the opposite. Housing is damn expensive, and if you've ever bought groceries there the prices are way higher than here.

Well here I am. First some background. I grew up in Moab, graduated from Grand County High School in 1980. I moved away in January 1986 & have been trying to find a way to permanently move back ever since. Currently I'm in the process of moving back on at least a temporary basis as my wife & I are splitting up. My family has lived in Moab since December 1969.

Cost of living in Moab is high. Housing is very high compared to the median wage and as others have pointed out fuel & food aren't exactly cheap either. Utilities are comparable to other communities in Utah as their rates are somewhat controlled by the state government. Fulltime permanent jobs are scarce in Moab, and those that exist don't pay especially well most of the time, a lot of people work two or more part time jobs. Finding housing now is likely to be tough, the tourist season has started & most rentals are taken for the summer. There is a local weekly AdVertiser publication that may help or you can contact some of the realtors, a few of them also do property management.

With that said would your company be looking to hire any local help in building this bank? I'll be looking for work soon & have a lot of experience on contsruction sites. I have many years of experience in low voltage electrical, mostly fire alarm & security applications but I've done a lot of other stuff too.

Let me know if I can help you out any. I know where most everything in town is & can maybe point you in the right direction for some things. I try to check in to this site every day or two when I can.

My wife and I moved to Moab from Seattle almost 6 years ago. Rent seems high here (expect to pay $700-$800 plus for a decent house, $500+ for a trailer), but it is definatley cheaper than Seattle. Food and gas prices are high. Utilities are probably close to other areas. This is a tourist town, and wages are low. For me, it's all worth it, but I don't see how many families can afford to live here.

Rick, thanks for the info. We'll probably be subcontracting all of the work except maybe the concrete, but I might be able to hook you up with a fire alarm or security subcontractor once we have someone on board. I'll put the word out for you. Lemme know if you see any 3-4 bedroom houses or condo's for rent. Do you know how much storage units go for? I'm probably gonna need one to park my 4Runner and motorcycles in.

Thanks Jeff. So far the cheapest places I've found are about $1500 a month for a house or a condo. Pretty spendy, but they are fully furnished and include utilities. If you know of something cheaper lemme know.

I have a good friend that owns Treadway Tire in Moab. He and his wife will help you find something I am sure. Give them a call at 435-259-9416 and tell them that Dennis in SLC sent you. Of course, you will have to get all of your wrenching (the stuff you don't do) there and tires, lots of tires!! hehe No, actually he has the lowest shop rate in town and is totally cool. If they don't know, they can probably hook you up with someone who does!!

Thanks Dennis, I'll look them up. It's good to know which shops to trust down there too. I do 90% of my own wrenching, but sometimes I don't have the time to do what I want/need to.

I'm probably a few weeks away from moving down yet, but thanks to everyone for the reply's. I have some good leads on some housing now thanks to RME.

It will be a couple of weeks before I'm back in Moab too. I'm trying to sell off a bunch of stuff I don't want to move and I'm sticking around to help my dart team win the league championship. All I can really say is good luck finding a decent affordable rental now. Most have been gone for a couple of months as people come to town to work for the summer tourist season. Late Fall through Winter is the best time to find rentals as many pwople go somewhere else to work or play.

I'll be around looking for some work & will let you know if I'm available. Maybe we can do some wheeling together over the summer too.

Hell yeah, sounds good! I just got my 4Runner back in action over the weekend, so I'll be ready to go have some fun.

Yeah, the 'Runner is finally ready to go play. Too bad I was a day late for Delta :-\ . I gotta go scope out a place to stay in Moab soon...hopefully in the next few weeks. You're welcome to crash down there anytime once I find a place.
