Why are text messages marked up over 7000%

Free market? When it's too expensive people will stop paying it. Until people stop paying it, the price has not exceeded the value. Just because something is profitable doesn't mean it's overpriced. If you don't want to pay 15 cents per text message (the same rate as ALL national carriers, BTW) than purchase a text plan. They are drastically less expensive that way.

i still can't grasp the use of a frigin text message.why spent all that time slow typing a conversation that takes 2 seconds to speak

You ever call people that sometimes can't answer at work? Ever have to sit through meetings, conference calls, classes, etc where you can't talk but would like to communicate with someone? Ever have small comments, questions, statements, expletives, etc that you'd like to tell someone but it's not worth the trouble to pick up the phone, dial, and make them answer at that moment? Ever have lots of small comments you'd like to make over a long period of time, but don't want to spend that whole time on the phone (example, your coworker is a big Nuggets fan and you like to abuse him all during the Jazz/Nuggets game). Ever leave a voice mail for someone, and they call you back when you're not available, and then you call them back and they're not available, etc?

A call that would take two seconds to make would take one second to text, and if the person can't pick up right away, they'll read it when they are available, and answer you back. It might take you a long time to send one now, but if you use it a little bit you end up getting really fast. Text messaging is great. I text more than I talk, both for business and personal use. Try it, you'll understand in no time. ;)

The only benefit I can see is you can stop a conversation mid stride without any significant repercussions.

And you can communicate with people you don't want to speak to.

Rock-monkey...don't you work in the wireless industry?

My cell is a glorified pager. I get about 20 text messages a day from a monitoring tool that tells me that a server misses me and doesn't want me to have a social life. :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

And I can send a simple text message about as fast as I can type here. T9W rocks once you get the hang of it.

Yes, I work for Verizon Wireless. I oversee operations for 8 retail stores and I communicate all the time with my stores, my coworkers, and my boss through text messaging. I text my co-workers far more often than I call them. It's more polite. They're all busy people. If I call them they have to drop whatever they're doing (helping cutomers) to talk to me. If I text them they will respond when it will not interrupt them.

This Saturday after close of business all the stores have a small refresh they have to do (change out signs and merchandising). They have to infom me when they are done, and if they have any problems (missing signs, etc.). Some stores might not be done until 11 or 12. Do you think I want them calling me at midnight on Saturday? No way! They'll text me instead, and I'll compile the results on Monday. Texting is NOT just for kids. It's used by adults, elderly, and in the business world. ;)

If you have a basic $10 Verizon text package that includes 1500 messages, that makes them $.00666.... per text. That doesn't even include any you make Verizon to Verizon, which are freeeeee and unlimited with that plan.

The $.15/text is only if you don't pay for any text package, as Monkey said.

Also, texting rocks. (I'm one of the aforementioned people who can't answer the phone...)

I find myself quite often in an area where I don't have enough reception to carry a call but plenty for texting. Rockmonkey and I have a text-only relationship.
