Winch question

I just put a Mile Marker 9000 on my suzuki samurai. I have a 95 amp alternator and a marine cycle battery from Walmart.

The first time I used the winch to tension the line it worked fine.

Yesterday I used it to pull my friend out of a snowbank and the positive terminal on my battery melted off! I am using all the wiring that was supplied with the winch. The other strange part was that it still heated up even with no load on the line-i had to wind it up by hand.

Is that why guys go to the two battery setup? Is it better to have a deep cycle dedicated to the winch and another as the starting battery?

I was also wondering about setting up two batteries as a 24volt setup, has anyone out there done this?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Your winch and/or wiring is/are screwed. Warranty time. Quick, before you melt something else. That should NOT happen.

Are you using the battery side terminals for the winch? I don't think the side terminals, on most batteries, are rated for continous high amp loads like winching. Use the top terminals.

after closer examination, the wire comming from the alternator to the battery melted and caused the side terminal to heat up too much.

I checked the winch and it appears to be working fine.

is it o.k to beef up the alternator wire and take out the fuse?

Go ahead and beef up the wire, but still use a fuse. You still want some kind of protection in case something seriously goes wrong.

ok here's the deal

I bought a deep cycle battery from walmart-the biggest they had. This time i checked the amp hour rating (115) to make sure that it was more than the GM alternator I have can crank out (94).

I made a home for the larger than stock battery and used some heavy duty wire from the alternator to the positive terminal on the batt.

I also gave up on the longer wires on the winch control box and mounted it on the winch with the short wires that came with the winch.

I havn't pulled a huge load with it, but I did pull it all out and run it in without any problems.

Now, I just need to keep my eye out for another suv stuck in a snow bank.

I just bought a 9K MileMarker winch and was wondering how yours works. I don't have mine hooked up yet. Have you had any other problems besides the battery problem? I read a forum earlier about how all winches but Warn winches suck. Has your experience been positive? Does the brake work after the first time of use? Heard these stories and wanted to clear it up.

I have only used it a few times in the month that I have had it, so it may be too soon to tell.

My problems were more from the oversized alternator than the winch. I have the camero alternator that puts out twice what the stock samurai did. My battery just wasn't rated for the faster charging. the old junky wiring didn't help things either.

Where did you buy your milemarker? What are you putting it on?

I just bought it from someone on RME. It hasn't ever been used and they already had one. I am putting it on my Wrangler YJ. I am just waiting patiently to get the winch mount in the mail. Seems like it takes a lot more time when you have the winch and need the mount. I can't wait until I get it mounted. I went wheelin up the mountain the other night and sunk in snow. The combo of needing my OBA setup for the ARB and the winch should make it almost unstoppable when finally finished.

Let me know if you have any problems with it ever. What have you pulled with it and has it ever bogged out?

Yeah, I thought putting in two lockers, lower gears, a lift, and some larger tires would make the samurai unstoppable, but it just makes the recovery more interesting/fun.

I tend to do a lot of solo wheelin’, so I admitted defeat and got the winch.
