Wire or synthetic winch cable?

Should I replace the current line, if so, with what?

We stock a couple different kinds over 'der at Teraflex Plus, in both 5/16" and 3/8". One catch though, all the options in stock have a hook of some kind with them, so they aren't quite as cheap as buying one hook-less. (obviously we can get 'em in, but if we're talking about stock...)

5/16"x 100' start at $199. 3/8" is available in colors other than the typical blue, we have silver and black usually. (orange, yellow, and green available)

All of the brands are pretty good and most use the samson rope, i like the 3/8 (costs a little more) because it takes a little more abuse before snapping, you can always carry an extension because the stuff is freaking light. a 30-50 foot extension can fit under a seat without fear of it becoming a projectile. Amsteelblue.com is pretty cheap.

I bought mine from Rockstomper about 5 years ago

And just to add to my previous post. In those 5 years abuse I finally broke my rope a few months ago. I just tied a nasty knot in it and kept on going! (only lost about 4ft of rope) I love synthetic rope. :)

My sythetic rope came with a slider that I can move down the rope and put against a rock, then the rope slides inside the slider instead of against the rock. The rope needs to be wrapped up tight too when it's "installed" or it can wedge down between the other windings and be REALLY hard to pull back out.
My rope winds on and flattens out, but my friends rope is hard and feels solid, it has a wrap around it. I think I like his more, but it frayed just as fast as mine does.
Lastly, Faith. I know I am told that the rating on the rope is BETTER than the cable, but I look at it and then at the steel one and I have a hard time knowing it is stronger and having faith that it will not break on me when I am hanging on it on a waterfall

Broke my winch rope yesterday trying to pull my truck, trying to pull my trailer out of the back yard. It was my fault, thought that maybe it would hold up to a little tug (and it was a little tug), but it didn't. Just couldn't get enough traction with the buggy to get things moving. There was no bang, no release, it just pulled apart and dropped to the ground.

Sythetic Rope, I would NEVER give a tug on cable! Talk about loading a gun.... the recoil would kill you for sure! I know it can be repaired by weaving it, but I wonder if there might be other areas that got stressed or damaged at the time it broke. I likely will just buy a new one. Peace of mind is worth the cost of a new rope for me.

I wonder if synthetic rope isn't meant to be shock loaded? I've taken a couple crane safety classes & we have discussed that steel cable, slings, etc are not intended to take shock load, like you'd use in a situation with a tow strap. Sounds like that may be what happened with your rope.
