Wiring ignition system

Alright, I am using a push button start with a seperate on/off switch. This is kinda a dumb question but just want to make sure I do it correct.

I have the positive cable from the battery going to the starter, then I will have another wire going from that post to the on/off switch, then the other side of the on/off switch will go to the ign coil and to the starter button. Then I will have the other side of the starter bottun going down to the starter solenoid. Is this all correct or is there something obvious I am overlooking? I have attatched an awesome pic to help explain my drivel better:D

Run
bat. to starter
starter to hot post of ford solenoid or junction block
hot post to the switch/fuse block
switch to trigger post of solenoid
Alt charging wire to ford solenoid/junction

The ford solenoid is a clean solution helps with heat soak and makes for a convenient junction block on the firewall

so I take it I should go buy a ford solenoid? Do you by chance have a PN? or a referance vehicle (I think my 88 F250 had one)

71 f250 I am positive had one. I am sure there are many more, but I am only positive about that one.

Funny, I thought the solenoid was built into, or rather onto the starter.

Isn't a 4.3 wired darn near the same way as a 350?

identical, yes the solenoid is on the starter...I'm gonna do it a little different, I'm not gonna use the Ford solenoid. I'll go from the on/off switch to a small fuse panel that will run my fuel pump, coil, and any thing else that needs power in the key "on" position

For the record, I just cranked over my engine, first time my project has shown any signs of life in almost 4 yrs:eek:

It is. I run the ford/remote solenoid in addition to the integrated solenoid. Heat soak is one reason, but it also really cleans up the engine bay to have a single junction. I can also jump the starter under the hood really easily.

I run alt, bat, starter all to the hot side of the solenoid I also run a jumper from the hot post through a bulkhead connector in to the cab I use this to run a fuse block and the ign switch.

now that I think about it, I might do that...I could hook my winch up to that solenoid too right?

Yup, that's where my winch is hooked into. (on the solenoid on the starter, not a separate one)

I don't know how many amps the posts are rated to, but I doubt it would be a problem as long as you run heavy gauge cable from the bat and alt.

you may want to consider a jumper from the solenoid to something like this

the ford solenoid is NAPA part #ST81. Cost was $14.95

or you can get a kit here

where is your bat mounted? would it be a shorter run direct to the bat?

that was my original plan, to hook it to the starter solenoid but with everything hooked to it I dont have a ton of room left on the post...that ford one is pretty cheap, I think I might just do that, or maybe just a post like troutbum posted...

my battery is in the very back of the buggy...
