How do I get the crank pulley to hold still while I undo the center bolt? 4.0

any non impact wrench answers? I turn the wrench and the jeep moves. I tried threading bolts into damper and using a prybar against the frame, but the bolts just bent. I'm stuck here. Service manuel is alot of help too, just says "Remove the vibration damper retaining bolt and washer." :ugh:

Ya, I have had this pain before. If it is a stick, and I't is in the lowest gear, and the E brake is on, try a sharp hit/blow. Use the pry bar as you said and hit the end of the wrench with a sharp blow to try and brake it loose.

This is a manual trany right?

Yes, manual. I'll put it in 4low and try your advice.

I found that low gear has too much torque against drivetrain, so I put it in 5th gear and bolt came right out

It is not recomended to use the tranny and the brakes to hold the crank still. Cranks can and do get bent that way. Use a strap wrench on the dampner or use an impact.

Some times you gota use what you have. Personally, I have never heard of or seen one of these stap wrenches.

I would also say, that if your bolt is so tight that it is bending cranks,,, then the moron that put the bolt on so tight should be :shawn:

Cranks are actually more fragile than you would think. They say they can bend under their own weight sitting on a bench.

 Interesting.....

Anyway, I've got the old balancer off. It had slid out a whole .25" and was clapping on the fan. I'm gonna pick up a longer bolt tommorow so I don't strip out the crank threads :redneck: Also, I brought in the new balancer to keep it nice and warm while the crank is in freezing overnight. I read somewhere this would help :)

Thanks for the advice gentlemen...

Do you have an installer tool? You need one. Do not beat it on. You can not just use the crank bolt to press it on either.

I am not sure I buy that but people do say it. I would store one on its end just to be safe.
I have also heard this about camshafts as well, I didn't know this about crankshafts?

I bought a longer bolt so more thread would engage. Is this wrong. What installer tool?
This will work to get the balancer started. Use caution though. I would only run it in .25" or so, then go back to the stock size bolt for snugging tight.

Yes it is wrong. Get an installer tool. I would think Autozone or checker would have one in their free rental collection. If not I would lend mine out to a fellow RME member but I live quite a ways from you.
