Have any of you put an over the knuckle steering conversion on your xj or heard anything about them. I've got an 8" kit on my xj and my steering components now hit my swaybar disconnect bracket when I'm turning and flexed. I also need to upgrade (beef up) my components. Any suggestions?

I just got a thing from Gopher It Products, that raises the driver's side of the tie rod, above the knuckle, for extra clearance. I haven't installed it yet though. I also hear (no experience personally) that Rusty's conversion sucks.

all you have to do is re-ream your knuckles from the top and flip the tierod over to the top...I did it to my YJ...works great and impoves angles quite a bit...

Did that give you any problems w/ your drag link?

It would give an XJ/TJ/ZJ issues......I've heard of someone using a right hand drive draglink and that could work, but I've not done it. If he's a 8" of lift, I'd chuck the D30 front axle and think of something else.

......and just for the record. I run a G0-Fer-It tie rod with a stock draglink at 6". I've had excellent luck with it and I can bend a tie rod better than anyone I know (it's bent, but held up great for at least 1.5 years or so)..............I'd have a local shop make you up a decent tie rod and just use '89 Dodge 1/2 ton tie rod ends.

just take it in to J.R at MS.Conception he can build you some sweet steering. he uses moog chevy tre's (big ones) and puts it on top of the knuckle. my uncle is running this setup on his yj and i am running the same setup on my xj except my draglink mounts to a hi-steer arm off of the flat top.
plus, the tube he uses for this is huge, i think it is 1.5" o.d and .5" wall. it looks like an extra d30 under there
no really though it is beefy! my uncle had his front end wedged on a rock under the tie rod and all it did was scratch the paint. you could jack up the frontend from it (i wouldn"t)
this setup will be about 3 bills prolly, that has got to be better than a setup from any prefab place. call him up and ask.
there are pics of the steering links in my sig if you want to see how bad it is.

JR does some good work over there..... I've seen some pretty interesting steering from him.

300, my tie rod from AJ is 60 bucks and it's big too(DOM). Plus the TRE's will be 40 bucks from the parts store(full size dodge I believe)

After cosidering all the options, I built my own OTK inverted Y setup using DOM and ES150 TRE's for my XJ. It looks very similar to the stock setup, only much more beefy and up out of the way.....for those of you that frequently use your tierod for a nerfbar. :D
I also moved my trackbar axle mount to the top of the axle to match draglink angles, and my stabilizer is mounted up high and tight off of a new trackbar frame mount.

I reamed the knuckles from the top and the pitman arm from the bottom to accomidate the larger tapered TRE's and after dialing it all in, my steering is tight, DW free and Golden Crack tested. I am not selling this conversion, merely pointing out that you can do it yourself if you have the tools and fab skills and friends with a bender to make some minor clearancing tweaks. Plan on spending about $250-300.00 including the reamer for the whole setup. I have photos but not a site to hang them on for the masses to view.
MsConception has some good XJ/YJ/TJ HD steering options as does RockLogic if you aren't up to DIY and want to keep it local.

Rocklogic is on 1100 East and just barely north of 3500 South (west side of the road)...Ms Conceptions is on Redwood Rd. and about (guessing here) 2400 S. Ms. Conceptions phone number is 972-0232 and Rocklogics number is 463-1220
