XJ question...

So my friend has this stock XJ, and I'm trying to convince him to come out and 4-wheel sometime, but he says there's a leak in his coolant hose somewhere and he was told they'd have to take his entire engine out to replace it and that it'd cost him a couple thousand dollars... that didn't sound quite right to me, what should I tell him? Is that true?

well if it's a hose why not just replace it.why do you have to pull the whole motor to fix a leak.does it have a head gasket leak or freeze plug leak i just can't see it.

He said it's just a leaky hose, which is why I told him just to replace it. Then he said it'd be too much money, and I just couldn't make it match up in my head... so I thought I'd just check.

at worst he might loose alot of his coolant if its the lower radiator hose, other than that its a cheap and fast fix.

Unless it's actually a head gasket.... which would fit the price better.
Except that a new long block installed would run the same.
Fact is, if it is a hose as he says, then it's a simple fix. I can't think of one hose, metal or rubber, on an XJ that isn't easily fixed.

yet but if it's a head gasket he would know it .the engine would be dead or dieing or he would have coolant in his oil.i still don't see having to pull the whole motor to fix a head gasket

 We are guessing at a layman's interpretation of a layman's interpretation of what a more than likely crooked mechanic said.

I'm wondering if the mechanic said it was something more complicated, like warped head or head gasket, and your friend heard "leaky hose" in all of the mechanic talk....

Or he heard the price to fix it and then zoned out for the rest of the conversation :p

Maybe he is chicken... call him on it.. or even he might not like the thought of a girl out wheeling him..

If it is a leaky hose, then offer to help him with it.. then you might get that date you were looking for from him..

He's not my dating type... but I did offer to help fix his jeep! I told him I make an awfully cute grease monkey... unfortunately he seems pretty sure that it's not worth fixing. I told him that when he's ready to sell it I know just where he should start!

Have him get a second opinion. If you guys live in slc I could help him figure out if he's getting hosed or not (no pun intended). Pm me if you want a hand. I could look at it sometime after work and probably help him fix it if it is just a hose.

Hey Emily. Sorry I haven't called you back, I'll get to that. If you want to have him bring it by my work I can take a look at it and tell him what it really is and how hard it's going to be to fix it. There's no hose on that engine that you have to pull the entire thing to replace, somethings wacked about that story.
