XJ rear suspension tech

My son has about a 4.5" lift on his 99 XJ. While putting the 44 axle in the back I noticed his main rear leaf is broken. He needs to get new spring packs for the rear. I was going to order Rubicon Express 4.5 packs, but a friend said 3.5" packs and a longer rear shackle is a better way to go. What do the XJ guru's say?

if you can get a 3.5 pack that is a tad longer then the shackle I would say go that way (got my springs from AAA last time and I like them).. you want the shackle on close to a 45degree angle facing back or else your ride quality suffers and it will wear the spring pack out quicker. (this has been my experience at least)
I feel like the 3.5 and shackle gives me a bit more flex and smoother ride on the road.
YMMV

Go with the 3.5 springs and a shackle. I threw on the 4.5 inch RE pack and it gave me more height than I wanted (5-5.5"). I still need to add a shackle to it as well, since the angle it's on now has it hit the shackle box. I'm also considering pulling a leaf out of the packs to soften them up, as they are pretty stiff, except when fully loaded.

I'm up in the air about it right now, as I want to go to 35's next spring/summer, so if anyone else has these, let me know.....

Bart, Brett is right, R/E springs have a tendancy to sit a little tall. I would use the 3.5's with a shackle as well. For once me and scott agree. He he he. The flatter the spring the better the ride and flex.

I had a 95 XJ and I put the Pro-Comp Add-a-leaf on it, it still didn't sit high enough, even with the Warrior extended shackles I had to put a YJ leaf on it so that the XJ would sit level, if I ever did it again I would definately buy the spring pack...

Good advise Bart, RE1463 3.5 " leaf and 1.5" shackle will work well. When I built my D44, I installed taller, longer spring perches so that my net lift would be 6".
