xj wont start at times

Well we are having some issue with my daughters jeep. Sometimes we go out and it wont start. Battery is good and everything. I turn the key and the engine does not turn over at all. The starter does not even engage. Any ideas?

Oh it is a 92 xj 4.0 auto.

Lee, I have heard the CPS could be a culprit. Or check starter solenoids make sure they're tight. No experience with this issue other than battery. Jeepforum had some threads on this though.

I'm betting it's a bad starter. Does the "starter not even engage" mean that it won't spin and you hear a 'click'? You can break out the hammer and tap the starter pretty good. That might free the rotating assembly enough to make it start. If that fixes it, you'll need a starter soon.

Well the only thing I hear when I turn the key is I am going to guess but it is the fuel pump kicking in. The starter does not turn over at all. The engine does not turn over.

i know this might sound kinda dumb, but have you checked your battery terminals and leads and made sure they are clean? quite often the simplest thing is overlooked, yet that is the problem.

He's totally right. Check those first. If those check out (corrosion/oxidation),

pull the starter and get it checked.

PRND switch on the transmission, put it in neutral and with the key in the start position wiggle the shifter forward and backwards. (if it's a manual I'm pretty sure it's on the clutch petal)

Mine does the same thing, I don't know whats causing it but I pop the hood and jiggle the cps connection on the back of the intake manifold and it starts right up.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH!!!!

Next time it wont start.......put it in neutral and I bet it fires right up

I was going to say this as well. Same exact thing happened to me this spring. I did find a write-up on how to rebuild them. THey basically get all corroded and dirty inside and need cleaned out. Unfortunately, I found the write-up about 3 days after I replaced the whole unit. :wtc:

Okay if this is the issue how hard is it to replace? I mean I did the rear main seal so would it be harder then that?

I would look into rebuilding it first. I havent touched mine yet. Still have to just put it in nuetral to start it ever once in awhile. They are something like 300 bucks new and I am pretty sure it bolts to the side of the tranny. Let me know what you find. Maybe someday I will fix mine
