YJ springover steering?

What should I do to my steering when I spring the YJ over? I'm not going to keep these axles more than a few months so I don't really want to go buy a crossover knuckle. I've heard of guys doing a z bend link and I'm wondering how well those work.

Well, I'm of little help there as I'll be putting a hi-steer arm on mine. I'm wondering how you'll hit the 'stock' location on the knuckle with a leaf spring in the way (maybe a 'Z' link would work?)

I ran mine for a long time with a bent drag link. If you do it make SURE you gusset that thing. With stock springs on the springover I could get away with running a straight one, but it rubbed a little bit on the spring.

Edit. I also broke the drag link several times

I had mine done a while back by JR at Ms Conception. He welded plates vertical to get it up above the leaf springs and then a thick piece flat to that in order to mount the tie rod to. I will have to see if I can get some pics tonight if interested.

Yeah, please do. I'm a little confused by the description.

I'm not going to wheel my jeep like this any more than maybe rattlesnake a few times or little moad so it doesn't need to be permanent or super duty.

for temporary, just do the Z-link, suzuki guys do it regularly, not that it means it is super safe or anything...just a bandaid until vendors came up with hi-steer.

here is the way to build one....

set your tires straight

set your steering box straight.

Measure a straight line between the two mounting points. This length will be your final length when you are done with the Z-link. Then make something that looks like this...

make sure you gusset liberally and make it adjustable if you are not super secure about your measuring abilities.

If you needed help and got all the parts together, I would help you because when I do a spring over, I plan on something similar so I wouldn't mind working the bugs out on your ride...this, of course, would mean that you would have to come to north ogden to do this but I have a good welder and a bender and some experience building them for samurais.

Do you have a bender Spence? I'm thinking of just cutting the stock peice and welding in an insert after some bends. That would only be a peice of pipe and some flat stock to gusset it with. I know this is super gheto fab but I won't put more than ten miles on it. I just need something so I can steer the thing while I'm working on it. No street driving and only a little test-wheeling.

Oh by the way, the ol' XT550's still running strong.

One more thing. How's your experience with those Birf's you guys put in your XJ been? I'm thinking of going that rout with a 44 on the YJ.

those CVs went into a d-60 kingpin...they are super pricey PM andy for details.

I have a bender...but if you only need to put 10 miles on it, you will have to drive 45 miles just to get here...

ahhhhh, wish I had a D60 :( . I have a trailer so it won't be driving anywhere, especially not on freeway.
