i kinda want to lock up my sami rear until i put in the d44's. that is, if it is cheap and easy. what are a few of the options and do you think they really compromise strength in an axle that is already weak? i know i can get a lockright or mini spool, but i dunno which one to get. i know one of you guys has a locker or mini spool laying around that you wanna give me.
thanks,
nate

As long as its not a DD, I'd say go with a spool, otherwise get an EZ or LR. Spence ran his LR in the rear for about three years /w 32" tires and only just finished breaking his stock set of axles (and that was after running welded/spooled for a few months).

As far as installing a locker or spool (lockers being only just a little more technical) it really isn't that hard if you have instructions or somebody who can show you what to do. Just make sure to mark where everything was.

I love my lockright in the rear of my sammy...I have the detriot ez locker up front..almost the same, but slightly different pin arngmnt...I have no clue how to set up a locker or how differentials work(i can rebuild everything but them for some damn reason)anyway, my lockright in my chev tracker rear end is all messed up due to an improper installation curtosy of DJ's traction systems, an I called brent up at trail tough about it. Brent told me if i shippe dhim my 3rd member and the locker, he would install the whole thing for $25 and then ship it back...thats the way I would go. as far as a spool? ditch that idea, the lockright is stronger than your r&P gears and it unlcoks when cornering, saving tires and a whole lot of greif when trying to corner in a tight nasty spot on slickrock. :) buy the lockright and ship it to trail tough for the setup :)

setup of lockright is FRICKIN SIMPLE!!! I have never installed something as easy as a lockright. you don't have to reset the gears or anything, just mark everything so you put it back exactly how you took it apart.

I have both mini-spool and lockright. I ran my lockright for a long time in the rear end and it was OK. I hated the ratcheting and banging and all the loud knocks that are inherent with a ratchet style locker so I tossed it up front and put the mini spool in the rear. If you run around town, get the lockright. If you are dedicated trail rig, there is nothing nicer than a SPOOL...if someone around here has never ran a spool or welded, don't listen to their advice about it on the trail...the spool is far superior in reliability and simplicity in the rear end of your vehicle. I will never run an ARB or anything like that out back because of the reliability issues...you can't go wrong with a spool.

Again spool it if it is a dedicated trail rig.

turning on slick rock...Schmoe...give me a break....

If you need help installing something in a zuk, talk to me, I have done it all a half dozen times...I have done t-case gears, lockers, axle bearings, transmissions, motors...the works...but if you are changing gear ratios in your diffs...take it to a pro like rocklogic, or Andy at 6-states....andy has been doing diffs EVERY day for years...he knows his stuff. Rocklogic specializes in jap parts so they know their stuff too.

other than that....a samurai is the ultimate DIY vehicle. Cheap and easy to work on...if you need lockers installed, bring me the diff and save yourself the shipping to oregon...usually about 30$ for a diff. If you buy zuk parts, get them from trailtough, they are the best guys in the business...dont even say the RRO word around me...I get irate.

Buy me a pizza and I will teach you how to do it in less than an hour....I like helping out my zuki brethren.

I am trying to sell my parts in my axles so I can go d-44s so let me know 791-0377

I love the spool and have had no problems with turning. but like spenc said get the lockright if you drive on the roads alot. I think teh spool is alot stonger then a Lockright.

the sami is just my little toy, ity is actually my brothers but i do the work on it. we bought it for 1k last year at ejs. it had a 4" shack lift and 31x12.50 thornbirds(i hate these tires). but then we painted it and stripped it down some, then herculined the inside. i installed the calmini t-case gears, not the super low ones, they came out right after we got the other ones. but yeah, it is not for street, it is not even licensed or insured right now. we are going to register and insure it for offroad. plus we tow it everywhere.
to sum it all up, it is my little toy, the jeep is what really matters. once i get the heep out of the garage we will put in the 44's that i got for free!!!!! and spring it over with yj springs and maybe 1/4 ellip... i dunno, but i am going to make james help me with it all... sucker! james if you are reading this i didn't mean it when i called you a sucker.
i am not sure if i wanna lock it up or not, it shouldn't be too long till we put in the 44's anyway (fingers crossed).
oh and james dude i got my 4" yj springs now, they are pro comps and i scored them from 4 wheel parts for $150 with a complete poly bushing kit... the jeep is looking a lot more level now. oh and this way i can use my 2.5"ers for the sami!!! score!

i'll have to run the minispool idea past my brother (also named spencer)...

thanks,
nate
