If you fly fish in Idaho last week was a good time to be out. The fishing was fantastic.

Happy kid

Many big browns and cutties. They were fatty's too.

Then.........................I quit paying attention and sunk the boat, like not good. Here are some good samaritans helping us empty the water after we drug it to the bank. We were fine minus some fishing stuff and a really expensive rod/reel but someone saw us floating down without a boat and called the search and rescue. We met them near the launch while rowing back to the truck and trailer. It was pretty funny by then.

Now I can't get the motor running right again. It's not hydrolocked or corroded but it won't idle. I'll keep working on it. Ideas?

I couldn't stay away so yesterday evening I went by myself, so the photos suck. I think one of these could be the state record, but without help I couldn't get the measurements and such without the fish dying so I put it back. It was a lot of fun. NO, not snagging them, these were caught on flies.

Grouse season opened on Friday, while our sandhill crane hunt opened on Saturday. Decisions, decisions. :D

I love opening days, the early rising, the smells, sunrises, excitement; all of it. We started by listening to his on the way to the grouse covert:

Two hunts and just over 10 miles left us and the dogs sore and blistered but we had moved 39 birds! It was incredible. More blues than normal which is a very welcome development. We also went out Saturday morning but we were all tired and sore. Another 5 miles and another 13 flushes. We let all the bird of the year ruffies to live another day and could have easily limited out, nearly did on just Blues. It was an opener to remember.

And after 9 seasons together this guy just can't do it any longer. He's good for an hour so he'll get a few chances but it's tough to leave him home.

Labor day was the first day my oldest son was available to hunt cranes with me. He had been out archery hunting for elk, but Monday we went early to try our luck.

After being frustrated by birds on private ground in the middle of cut grain fields (nearly impossible to sneak up on them) we headed to another spot we like. After a couple of attempts to get on birds we found three in a standing grain field on public ground. We made a plan where I would sneak in and hopefully push them toward my boy. As I half crawled through the grain I realized I just might get close enough. It worked out great and I was rewarded with success. My son had another chance later but he couldn't quite get close enough and had to try a hail marry to no avail. They are very wary and have really good vision so they are tough.

It was a good time. Since these are the "ribeye of the sky" I'm excited to cook them up in a day or two.

It sucks leaving them home. At about 13, we went on our last hunt together. He was struggling to make it to the top where we chukar hunt. About 3/4 of the way up we got into birds and he forgot all about being old. When the action was over he sat down and I thought it was the end for him. Fortunately, I got him back to the truck.

That's great, my guy is 12 now but I got him at 2.5. Mine still whines a long time after we leave, he gets all the treats and a soft bed but like yours for an hour or so he forgets everything when we get into birds. It's an interesting relationship; a hunter and his dog.

Those are good looking fish. I decided I was going to do some river fly fishing last weekend since my SIL decided to come to town and I was going to leave the boys home. I went to four new spots and caught five itty bitty brook trout. I've never fished rivers so I was trying my best but the fair size fish weren't willing to play. After that I gave in and fished the lake I usually do and caught a whole mess of tigers and brooks and had a lot of fun. I almost stayed an extra night but I had told my wife I was going to be home so I at least needed to drive to phone reception to tell her and ended up just getting home late.

I still want to learn to fly fish rivers but don't know that I can, or want to, do it on my own.

I'm your huckleberry.

But, after following a million Utah plated cars who can't seem to understand the concept of merging yesterday I'll need a day or two. Seriously, if you want to come up this way for a day or two I can take you out and help the best I can. I think it would be fun and productive. Send me a pm if you are interested.
