It’s new bike time for my son Jonah. He races NICA but not competitive. Enjoys the practices more than the races. He likes bike parks. Likes to jump and likes drops.

I need a bike that can do it all but I’d say more with a leaning to enduro than xc

Thinking Santa Cruz tall boy, Hightower or 5010

Also in the mix is ibis Ripley, transition spur, RM instinct , etc.

I’m a Santa Cruz fan myself. I found a decent priced 2023 5010. This is a mullet bike.
I’m thinking it might suit his style and wants pretty decently.

What’s yours guys takes on a mullet?

Anyone selling something that might fit the bill? Needs to be a Large frame.
If I recal, you are in Davis County. Visit Biker's Edge in Kaysville when shopping if shopping new. They have been running specials, and one of the owners, Zach, supports the NICA kids as well. Tell him Dave Wilson sent you.

I'm posting up to hold myself accountable. I'm taking the bike to the 500S Bountiful/Legacy Hwy trail at about 4:45 pm. I'll ride for probably 15-20 min and then collapse putting the bike back in my truck :D. Work from home is rough on my "fitness". I need a fix. This is a shot. I'm trying to go out at least 3-4 times per week. Winters a good time to start biking, right?

If you're up for riding with an out of shape dude, I'll catch you there. I plan to go south from the parking lot and then struggle back.

I haven't even tried to put a bike in my Gladiator. Do they fit in the bed? I had a '76 shortbed Chev when I first started hauling the pedal bike to college and it fit with room to spare. Worst case, I can get the F350 fired up (a bit of a challenge with the colder temps) and utilize the 8' bed.

Moving blanket over the tailgate and turn the handlebars 90 degrees. They even fit in girly tacoma's that way.

Yup. Antelope Island and Eagle Mountain trails are pretty sandy and dry out real quick. If stuff is muddy, go real early while it's still frozen.

Wish I could join you. Post up next time you head out, this fat old man needs to pedal too.

If there's a Trek that floats your boat, Scheels honors Trek's 25% discount for NICA riders.

So that was 2.6 miles. Not too bad. I did that in about 15 min or so. I thought my app was recording my time/speed but it wasn't. I'll likely do the same location tomorrow but head north. 4:45 again. I'll have to skip Wednesday but plan to do some riding again on Thursday.

The cold was a bit of a factor but not as bad as you'd think. Insulated work gloves kept my hands warmish and just pedaling kept me warm except for my nose/ears. They weren't exposed long enough to be a factor at that temp.

We'll see what that turns into.

Should I stick with 2-3 mile trips for a couple weeks or just keep adding .5-1 mile per trip every time?

Wait and see how you feel tomorrow. Even if your legs and lungs are fine, your sit bones won't be happy with much abuse at this point. Dial it up slow at first.

couple staying warm tips. nitrile gloves under regular riding gloves works wonders on keeping the hands warm. it is way thinner than insulated work gloves letting your fingers have nice movement still. havent found a good solution for the toes. I have heard road bikers use ziplock bags over the socks for the same thing but I havent tried it. for the nose and ears I go with a full face enduro helmet still loads of air gets in to breath. its not as warm as a moto or dh helmet but better than a open face. im sure diffent brands work diffrently there.

@ChestonScout The NICA discount I forgot about. Biker's Edge entertains that one too.

Let me get through this next week and I would love to join you and I will even bring an added treat for you. I have two e-bikes, don't be fooled, it is a workout and we can get 3 times that distance in the same time.

Went to Pronghorn bike shop. Found out the owner is the same guy that owns Maddox in Brigham city.

Employees were super helpful. They gave us a massive NICA discount

Looks like we are getting a Niner RIP. Looks like a nice bike. They are upgrading the brakes and the shifter to code and gx for no additional cost. Also making it tubless.

I don’t have any experience with Niner but everyone I have asked said they are good bikes

I had my heart kind of set on a Santa Cruz but for the money we wanted to spend I think this is a good buy

Time will tell

when I was doing the bike shop life I worked on a few of the niners. so I have only test ridden them in parking lots but working on them they alwasy seemed to have a really good build quality to them and as much as you can learn in a flat parking lot I felt they rode really good.

I got a phone call from the owner of Pronghorn thanking me for doing business with them and said he was going to throw more extras in to help Jonah with his racing.

I’m definitely impressed. If the bike is half as good as the customer service,…..

Should be picking it up tonight with all the upgrades complete as long as I get off work in time. I’ll post pics

Just an FYI on my goals. I have had challenging back pain from Friday-Sunday. I'm in pretty good shape today but I'm kind of curious how tonight's ride will affect things. We'll know tomorrow

(I rode 2.5 miles on Thursday and then hunched over my car (not a new exercise) for at least an hour trying to tidy some wiring)

You might have a bad fit on the bike. Try raising the handlebars a hair. You probably have a threaded/quill steerer, which makes it easy.

I should look into fitting my bike for sure. What seat height, what handlebar height etc. I really haven't done anything active other than walking and/or golf for 20+ years. It'll take a while for a 5 decade + body to adjust to the new reality I'm throwing at it. I don't have spinal pain, it' s just muscle pain. I assume just overall grumpyness of a back that's languished for a while. I'll keep my riding at a pavement level for another week or two and see how it goes.

I was pretty good at listening to my body for the first 25 years of my life. I've let it languish and my mind/body need to create some synergy. Right now, my mind is telling my body it's going to do something and my body is saying "wanna bet"? The mind will ultimately win, I just have to adjust to the realities of where I'm at these days.

My goal is to be more "active". I should drop about 10-15 lbs just from that. We'll evaluate from there. A couple of diet changes and such could make a BEEEEG difference if I stay active. It'd be great to be about 220-230 lbs or so in a maintainable way. I got to 225 or so with Keto diet but that lasted as long as I was on the diet.
