    Camping Tips: The Sleeping Pad

It's been stated already, but another reason to borrow the xtherm and try one first is the crinkly noise factor. Doesn't bother me, but I could see how it could.

Dave, where do you get your Mary Janes meals?

    Backpacking Meals

X2 on mountain house being the best flavor. I like that you can get different size servings with the smaller propak and larger "2 serving" size. Stroganoff is a favorite as well as spaghetti and lasagna. I like easy. Kindof similar to the spud bomb above, Idahoan instant potatoes in your...

4bt motor swap in a 2008 Jeep JKUR

This is really the key. I would say that a lot of the guys I know who do an engine/drivetrain swap, me included, could get a more "economical" result by buying a rig that is already equipped with a similar/better than current drivetrain. Most of us like to tinker and like having something a...

    The Snowshoeing Thread

I use a Gossamer Gear Gorilla and it is about the right size (39L main, 46L total) for everything I like to carry in a cold weather overnighter, but I use every bit of the main pack body. I do like to be prepared for everything clothing-wise.

    Yurting

We XC ski and stay at the Bear River Outdoor Recreational Alliance (BRORA) yurts every year with our older scouts. They are located up near the Bear River Lodge and East Fork of the Bear River. I've stayed in the Ridge and BearClaw yurts. See brorayurts.org for more info. We always have a...

    Camping tips:The Sleeping bag

I can tell you my EE RevX 20 degree long & wide weighs 26.3 oz. actual, so I would guess they are not far off. I'm guessing that is without the stuff sack.

    Camping tips:The Sleeping bag

I'll have to try it out tonight. I'm not sure if I've tried that stretched out.

    Camping tips:The Sleeping bag

I'm a thrashing side-sleeper. If it is cold, I cinch around my neck and wear a beanie. I get a comfortable sound sleep at 20 degrees with just a base layer and neoair xtherm and I generally sleep cold. At 30 or above, I leave the top open. 40 or above, I have to open the side or bottom up...

    Camping tips:The Sleeping bag

I love my EE RevelationX, but I haven't tried any other quilts to compare it with. You are welcome to try it out if that would help. I think it is a long wide 20 degree.

New bag, WM Megalite or Zpacks? Fear based decision?

I'd buy the ZPacks bag, try it out, and sell it to buy the WM if you aren't completely satisfied. You would probably be out $30 or $40, but you would probably spend that to get the 7oz anyway, right? It would probably sell in a hurry on the BackpackingLight board if not here.

    The Snowshoeing Thread

Fleece is not a softshell, although a softshell may be fleece-lined. Softshells are usually thicker than hardshell and feel kindof like thin neoprene, although I'm not sure what they are made of. The thickness gives them better insulating properties than a hardshell but they breathe much...

    Camping Tips: The Sleeping Pad

How many of you fill your cold weather pads with an inflator to avoid condensation? The pouch for my xtherm doubles as a pump bag type thing. I try to fill it using that and then top off by breath. Before I had the xtherm, I had one of those long inflator bags - don't remember the name.

    Camping Tips: The Sleeping Pad

I've never used many closed cell pads because my skinny hips need more padding. Can someone comment on the waffle style pads vs flat? Also, how much better are the reflective coated models?

So how horrible is living in Grantsville??

I live in Stansbury Park and love it! I would have no problem living in grantsville. My commute to near the slc airport rarely takes more than 35 minutes door to door since 36 was widened years ago. Maybe 3-4 bad days every winter exceed that. In the interest if full disclosure, I grew up in...

If you want to try xc on decent equipment, REI rents a good package for about $10. The outdoor rec program at the U also rents for a pretty cheap price.

    The Snowshoeing Thread

We ski into one of these yurts every winter with our older scouts. We are going Dec 13-14th this year. It is a blast! Unlike you, I like the XC better than snowshoeing, but maybe that will change as I get out on the snowshoes more! I think we are at bearclaw this year. Last year we were in...
