I used Lubro Moly 75w-90. Local Napa carries it.

Never had any fuel leak issues. No ventectomy, but I use the nozzle to hold the button in the neck down and fill that extra 1.5-2 gallons. Sounds like it could just be where the hose clamps to the tank.
