Well, I love my Cummins. Now some of you have said that off the line, the V8 is faster, OK, and the 6 pulls hills better. I won't agrue this in any way. That is a differance between a six and a V8. I do know this. The cummins is the most used engine out there. It is used in more applications then anything else in this field. School buses to Boats. Dodge is the only company using the same basic engine it started with 17 years ago. Now if you want the biggest cab on the market you want a Dodge. Normally I can give a better price than the samething in a Ford. Yes this would be a Mega Cab. Stacks and autos, I drive a stick. Add-ons, I'm running a hot Juice with Attitude, getting a Attitude II today. LWB Mega cabs will be coming out for 07 from what I understand. Yes duallys too.

I am new to Diesel trucks. I bought an 06 PSD crewcab 4x4 for a sicker price of $36 K in September. Of course I jumped on that good deal. It was that employee pricing deal. How much for a Dodge 3500 CTD?

Depends on the truck. I'd have to do a sheet on it.

I have an 05 Dodge 3/4 ton crew cab short bed CTD that is completely stock. Around town I average 17 to 18 mpg and on the highway it's between 20 and 21 mpg. We do live in the mountains though and I am a spastic "throttle jockey" according to my husband. :D Now he drives an 02 PSD 1 ton crew cab long bed with a little bigger tire, 285's vs the stock 265's, an AFE air filter, and a "custom" exhaust...ie he cut the muffler off with the sawzall. It's his work truck so he's always pulling around 12,000 pounds of equipment behind it. But even with that he still gets an average of 13 to 15 mpg. Owning both a Ford and a Dodge, I would have to say the ideal truck is a Ford with a Cummins. Fords are just a little bit nicer, have a few more ammenities than the Dodge, and the backseat is freakin HUGE! But the Dodge has the Cummins and that just rocks! And there is my 2 cents worth!;)

Why is there so much worry about gas mileage in a diesel?--Its a truck--if your worried about the gas prices, buy a Geo! right?

If you cant afford diesel, you probably cant afford the truck!
Step down to a "little" guys truck

Good thinkin', Jethro. Hell, maybe if you have a big diesel truck you should just pay DOUBLE, because after all, you can afford the truck... right??

Diesel advantages include: better mileage, and torque, and longer life. So it's a relevant and worthwhile question: how much real-world mileage are people getting? Is the buy-in for a diesel worth the extra money up front? It is if the mileage is better. THAT"S WHY PEOPLE ASK!! I"m about to drop about $4k on a Cummins conversion, and I need to get at least 14mpg over the next year and a half to make it worth doing. Otherwise, I'll pay less, but more often, for gas.

heheh

oh yeah... I don't believe anything over 20 for an average. I'd have to see that to believe it. My honest friend Tom claims an honest, calculated-by-miles-vs.-fuel 17-18mpg out of an 03 Duramax w/10k behind it... in a slight tailwind coming back from CA. That's the country-wide average. He wasn't going that fast though, either.

Well I guess the CTD vs PSD has come down to gallons per mile. My Diesel truck is a step up from what I have owned before so I dont count the gallons per mile. My Bronco gets about 10 mpg and my old 77 hi-boy with a 460 motor got about the same. On top of that the hi-boy had a 19 gallon gas tank.

Well I was allways a die hard cummins fan and dodge fan for the perormance/handling/off-road/fuel milage. I still like them but I have seen way to many of them in the shop sence 03 and the absolute only way to get them above like a 15mpg sence 03 was to chip them and allmost all of the onese that get chipped get some major surgery not to far down the line. So that is why after alot of market study and alot of hands on research I went with a hemi for about 9g less for what I do. If I made a living in the truck I would get the cummins. As for ford the reports show about 2x as many in the shop with 1/2 as many miles sence 03 and most where with out mods. just my .02

a deisel is always a go.

I own a 99.5 powerstoke i get about 10 in the city and about 14 on the freeway. but thats on a 7 in lift and 37 in toyos. but what is nice is i can throw the rig behind it and the mileage stays about the same. and im sorry but a deisel will out tow and out power a gas truck any day. So its worth buying a deisel. now for the ps against the cummins. the cummins is a great motor and so is the 7.3 l. but ever person i have talked to with the new ho cummins have had every one in the shop at 60 thousand miles with a blown #6 cylinder. ill stick with the older cummins or the 7.3 s.. but from the looks at it the 6.0 l. p.s is also a very peppy motor and gets alittle better gas milage too. (depending). but the reason they went to the 6.0 is because the admissions are cracking down and they needed a cleaner burning truck. but the way i look at it is personal preference. (the fastest truck in the state in a 7.3 l p.s.)

TOW RIG
99.5 powerstroke,six stage chip(140 hp), intake,4 in stainless exhaust,big heat waste gate,water methonal inj. , billet triple lock torgue converter, shift kit.

No matter how anyone drives their powerstrokes, I will still call BS on anyone that claims 20+ as an AVERAGE. If you say you have gotten as high as 21-22 fine, but as an AVERAGE :shaking:

To get 22, I have to go 60mph on level ground for a long time without speeding up or slowing down. I've done it, to see if it is possible. I also did 55, and got 26...with the easiest of acceleration and coasting to the pump...and lots of people flipping me off as they passed me.

55 = 26.5
60 = 22
65 = 18ish
72 = 16.5
78 = 14.5
All actual tests, all verified at the pump.

Around town, timing lights, easy on the throttle, under 2000, blah blah blah, 11.5, maybe 12.5. Around town and commuting 20 miles each way on the freeway, 13.5 to 14.5. Verified at the pump (the overhead is usually within 3%, it will say 14.1 and I got 14.5). There's some honesty folks, now they'll probably make me sell my psd and ban me from owning another one.

This is all for an '02 psd excursion.

Back to the question...I'd take either...but I was looking at the dodge.

Brett (none of the above: I'll be buying a Rescue)

That's pretty much my truck. The overhead is pretty close if you reset it every tank (according to my GPS that I reset at the same time).

HAHAHHAHAHA :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

These always turn into mpg discussions. Bottom line...either freakin' truck. I've always been die hard GM. I've got kids and tow a jeep. I had a vrtc 454 burb that did the job nicely, even for a gasser. I wanted a diesel. I'm happy I have a diesel now, I'll never go back. It's just so much nicer both on the hills, getting going, even on the flats. Stays in OD, blah blah blah.

Both the CTD and PSD are good, so is the dmax. It really depends on which truck you enjoy driving the most and fits your needs (and garage). The ctd quad and the excursion fit my needs, wallet, and garage. I drove the CTD quad and the excursion. Let me re-phrase that. I drove a LOT of ctd's and x's. 20 or so. The stock X drove like crap, lifted ones drove much better. So, I decided that if I wanted a 3rd seat then I'd have to put a lift on it. Probably would anyway. With 4 kids (and potential friends or family coming along) I went with the rig with the 3rd seat. An '02 psd Excursion limited. First thing I did was "correct" the suspension. VERY happy with it, all around.

Buy the one that fits your needs and wallet. Now that I have a f*rd, I'd buy another one. I also might buy a Dodge...or a chubby...just depends on my needs. GM didn't give a * about my loyalty...I asked for a dmax burb for years. We'll see how the prices on the Rescue shake out...$60K won't do it for me, but $40K might. $30K would be better...

Forums will always list the worst of the worst problems and make it sound like every truck on the road with xx or yy component will be in the shop all the time...only cuz the millions of people not having problems don't go to the forums and say "i'm not having any problems".

Find a good one and you'll be happy.

What reports? link?

They were on dealer connect and I don't have access to the reports anymore now I don't work there anymore. I was fun because they are the actual reports for the service departments and we had access to the dodge and Chevy reports and one of the guys there still could get on to get the ford reports and it was fun to have that many facts to throw at people, but it still didn't matter to some people. Why in the heck did they come to the dodge dealer ship when even if you show them how much they would save compared to the ford and Chevy not only cost of vehicle but cost of fuel, service, any possible maintenance and even aftermarket performance costs are almost 1/2 the cost per hp and even how much longer they last. Well guess I would still buy a dodge too even if someone showed me what I would show my potential customers. I just like they way they feel and how much tighter they turn and off road. I know if you want to off road build a jeep if you want a high performance fast vehicle buy a sports car, why when you can get a dodge Cummins that you can put the whole family in and get almost 800 hp for about $2500 on top of $32000, lift and tires $1500 depends on your taste and Brent Brown Dodge was warranteeing them most of the time. Depending on your sales man and how much pull he has and if he likes you. Sure with that much power you'll be putting it in the shop once in a while it is under warrantee that is still a deal for what you get.

check the ford forums there is a ton of threads where ford owners want to trade there 6.0 in for a old 7.3 they seem to have lots of problems with that 6.0 engine.

Cummins is proven, it's been around for ever. Every thing has some problems but I don't see cummins owners bagging on their trucks in the forums like the 6.0 ford owners bag on theirs.

A 6.0 at my work has it's third turbo in 1.5 years. It has blown the charge air cooler hose off countless times, and the charge cooler has been replaced. Ford now claims they have solved the issues. I hope so because they just ordered one for me.
