Good question. I would guess that the mechanical efficiency is very poor. There is a lot of friction over hard surfaces and a lot of sideways pushing of material over soft surfaces.

If they would have made it so both drums could have turned the same direction, rather than only against each other's rotation, they could have made it be able to strafe side to side as well. The industrial revolution of man sure was amazing eh.
