1985 2.8L v6 swap!!!!!!!!

I have got to get rid of this gutless 2.8l. Im just curious what will bolt up if any thing will. I have heard that a vortec will but I was just wondering what I would need. Could I bolt up an older chev motor any imput would be help.

P.S. I dont need any comment on how you cant fit a bigger motor under the hood of an 85 becaues i have seen any where from vortecs to v8 in them.

RWD Chevy 3.1/3.4 and some 3.8s. Bolt right in, some accessories carry over, and you get EFI. The 4.3 won't match the 2.8s transmissions.

im not farmiliar

so you are saying that this should bolt right up to my existing drive train? thats awsome. I dont want to get gready but is there something bigger? How well do you think that this 3.4 would tow?

That 2.8 is a POS and barely has enough power to move the motor alone, let alone 4k lb XJ. That 3.4 is a much better motor. I had put it in my 84? XJ about 5 years ago and was very happy with it. With the 2.8 I could not maintain the speed limit empty AND the gas mileage sucked! With the 3.4 it did much better, even towing my jet boat.

The best thing about it is the swap is super easy and most smog guys can't tell the difference. This was important in CA....

thanks

you guys have been a lot of help. I think i want to go with the siple plan. So i just want to get this straight will the 3.4L bolt straight up to the trans. What about motor mounts is there any modifacation there?

2.8/3.1/3.4 and SOME 3.8s (rare RWD motors...) are BOLT INS! If its in a Camaro or a Firebird, its all over but the wiring.

If I remember right, I didn't have any issues. I think I even used the same manifold/carb setup, distributor and accessories. Mine came from a Camaro....

Sure if you keep the carb... A guy on Comanche Club dropped a Camaro 3.8 and all the EFI stuff in a MJ... Easy to find. When I had my old 84 Celebrity commuter I rebuilt a hybrid 2.8/3.1 for it. HUGE difference. Differences between 84 and 85...
