1985 cherokee front end wont lock in 4wheel drive

I recently picked up a 1985 jeep cherokee but the front end wont lock in but it will go into 4 wheel drive and it go's both drive shafts spin but the front wont lock! nothing sounds broken so what could be wrong, i know the cherokees are funny when it comes to the axles!! Kinda cheap!

XJ I assume. Vacum dis-connect on the frt axle is likey the problem....could be the actuator itself or a vacum leak in the system. Check all the lines, see if you are getting vacum at the actuator. You can also use a little hand vacum pump to check the actuator.

Hey thanks for the info i went and checked it out and it was a hose that was disconnected so i connectedit and my 4wheel drive works great now so i apreciate it thanks
