Well I was going to wait until I finished this project before I uploaded anything just so people could see the end result before I had to explain everything. As it stands though I won't finish this until next weekend as I'm headed out of town this weekend, so here's what I'm currently working on.

I've decided to build some tube fenders that tie the front bumper to the rock-sliders and then take a tube through the side fenders above/between the radiator and alternator area. The tube will tie into the bottom tube on both side fenders.

Then I'll take some sheet-metal (probably 14-16 gauge) and weld it halfway up the tube all around to try and keep the fenders looking as "stock" as possible.

I will be painting the entire Jeep white, so these will be painted to match. Anyways enough with the talk...here are the pictures.

If you notice, there is a bend in the top part of the fender. I did this because the stock fenders have a slight bend to them, so it was either put a slight bend there (which may even help protect the engine more in the event of a roll) or have the end by the windshield 2" higher lol.

Here is what I am trying to avoid and why I am building these. This is a buddy of mine that I was with that flopped backwards over Labor Day Weekend in Moab between Rusty Nail and Gold Bar Rim.

It just got me thinking that I need to do something to prevent all that damage, as I was on that same obstacle moments before and the same could've happened to me. I ended up towing him off, and if that ever happened to me I'd like to still have a rig that runs after flipping it back on all fours.

I'd be careful in the future about guys standing on the top of giant obstacles, who are deflecting rigs as though they were volleyballs.. Volleyball dude 1 ~ Jeep 0..

I'm diggin your idea. That should be quite stout. Are you going to brace the two top tubes together under the hood at all? Not sure how much room.clearance there would even be for that.

Yeah, he was trying to grab the tire I guess... :ugh:

I am going to try and brace it, may have to trim the back of the hood a bit, we'll see. It would definitely help out structurally. I just want to avoid this looking like an exo-cage, been there...done that. Not my thing

I didn't get a whole lot done on the ZJ this past weekend since Saturday I worked most the day helping my buddy cage his K5. Then Sunday the weather was ****...but that won't be a problem for me anymore! (pictures as to why below ;))

I did happen to get one fender pretty much finished up, just need to smooth down the weld a bit. I also added one more bar going down the length of the fender, no pictures of that though. I'll get some on the next fender.

Also my SWEET Smittybilt XRC-8 Winch was way oxidized so I decided to paint it to match the ZJ.

That's it for now. I'll be pulling the front 44 and all the steering this coming weekend and finishing up the other fender.

What gauge sheet metal did you use to skin the fenders?

Looks great!:)

Thanks! I started using 12ga. but that turned out to be WAY too hard to work with so I ended up using 16ga. Seems to be plenty durable, definitely more-so than the stock fender ha.

looks sick dude.. it was cool meetin' ya at grandslam and thanks for the spot on hells gate ;)

Yeah you as well! You planning on going down this year as well?
