Just something that popped in my mind that might be helpful, I have seen more Duramax diesels pulled over to cool off going up Fairview canyon than any other truck.

This is my third powerstroke. I prefer driving my buddy's duramax - but I haven't thrown down on good tuners yet. It feels way underpowered, in comparison to the duramax, and doesn't ride as smooth and comfy. Can't comment on the reliability of the GM, but you will 100% be replacing the tranny on the Ford. I bought mine with 120k, and I bought a 3 yr, 60k mile warranty, luckily, because I replaced the transmission and injectors, starter, and alternator in the first year and a half.

Also, I have gotten 20 mpg, not at band camp. But that is grandma driving at 1700 rpm on flat freeway. Around town (real driving) is mid teens.

I have an 04 Duramax crew cab. Currently sitting at 340K miles (I purchased it about 18 months ago.)

Can not complain about how it has performed and repairs in the time I have had it, although it is at the shop today for some overheating issues. Mechanic suspect fan clutch.

The only time it has overheated has been while hauling the horses (trailer plus 3-4 horses 8-9k pounds) up slow-go gravel roads with significant grades. At highway speeds even with some climbing has done fine, although have not trailered over Parleys since taking the boat to Flaming Gorge last fall.

I certainly would have zero hesitation to buy another one.

Duramax trucks are known for cooling issues. Its usually from a clogged up A/C condenser as the fins on them are VERY tight. Once they clog they don't allow a lot of air flow. Might something else to look at with yours.

Well I found a 2003 Duramax with 222K for a pretty good deal. so far I am really liking the truck it rides really nice on the freeway and has plenty of power. I plan to keep it stock but I will be adding some gauges although it does have a built in tranny gauge in the dash I still want to get them. thanks everyone who commented.
