I was wondering if anyone out there has done a FI swap on a older (1984) cherokee with a 2.8, and if so, what did you use.

I was looking into putting a FI system from a blazer or jimmy with a 2.8 on the motor but I am unsure if it will work. Anyone know if this is possible or if there are any cheap FI swaps you can do on a 2.8?

You must really love that Cherokee.

Seriously nothing you do to that motor is really going to make much difference and your effort would be better spent swapping in a 3.4 they bolt right in.

Yeah I would rather swap a motor than go through this trouble but it is my bro's and he wants just fuel injection not a bigger motor. We have a 5.0 we were going to swap in it. Now that is a motor!

Where could I find a 3.4 that is not front wheel drive, or can you convert a 3.4 to rear wheel drive without much heartburn?

Also what do you about the air intake, I have a 3.4 from a Buick and the air intake goes back past the bell housing where can you get one that goes forward? Anyone out there done this swap??? If so give my bro a call, Phil 801-209-0801

Actually that 3.4 is a 3800, will that work?

Nope, starter motor is on the wrong side and the bellhousing doesn't have a notch for it. Hard time to work out some motormounts too.
I'm just about finished with my 3.4 swap, I'm keeping the fuel injection. Soon as I get my wiring harness back in, it'll be ready to fire, then it's over to Mepco to have the headers installed.
Having gone through the work, it's probably in your best interest to junk the old motor and do the swap, it's easy and not terribly expensive. Look for a 95ish camero or firebird.

thats cool, I didn't realize you were doing this swap...externally these engines are almost identical aren't they? I have heard the main issue is the flywheels are balanced differently...

Some Cameros have a 2.8 F.I. in them. You can pick the whole car up for $300 typically. BTW PM me about something I have that you might be interested in.

Yup, that's pretty much the most obvious difference. They are the same engine, just evolved really. I've done the swap keeping the fuel injection, I think I and a guy in Arizona who's doing the same thing are the first ones to try this. It's not that much extra work though. It actually might be less than what they have to do to convert back to the old pulleys and carb. I'll be done in a couple weeks, so we'll know how well it does.
If you're looking for more performance in your jeep, you're not looking at the right engine to do it with. They don't have a lot to offer. 110 hp at best.

actually this is a VERY common swap...in fact I was gonna do it back when I was 17 so 6 years ago...there used to be an awesome write-up on it on offroad.com. Thats how I knew the flywheels were different...benefit to the 3.4L is there are a ton of aftermarket parts for them (especially through GM directly)

Yeah, I know the swap is common. I meant that no one I know has kept the MPFI.
