The 5-6 I saw with firearms on their belt didn't bug me at all.

Mike Swensen paraphrased quote: "we're starting a war. Not of guns and bombs, but if it was we'd win in a minute".

Disappointed with their coverage. Fox 13 must get a check from SUWA. Lets see what 2 news has to say. So far I am disgusted with the media coverage.

FOX 13 coverage was very poor. I was very dissapointed. It was a huge event and SUWA got as much of the time as the good guys. I had better thing to do tonight than wait for such a poorly done story.

Weeds attached to the undercarriage of vehicles thus causing wildfires?? This is the crap that SUWA was saying on channel 5..

What's the ratio of wildfires started by hot undercarriages vs. lightening strikes?

I think channel 2 has the best report by far. They didn't include any stupid interviews from SUWA, and it was just a nuetral report of what went down.

You know, I will say that I was not impressed with the 'gun clinging' type comments. I think it detracts from the overall reason that most were there for. I think that kind of sh!t needs to be closely watched, as it really brings on a very red-neck vibe.

The comments from peeps in the SLC Trib are full of hate; the deseret news link at the time I checked seemed a moderate balance. I usually NEVER post comments but when I read "where in the constitution does it say the states own the land?" I had to 'splain how the federal system of govment works and who is beholden to whom and what the 10th amendment is. Of course, I had to do it in like 4 or 5 sentences.
I didn't bother in the SLC Trib since the comments were full of personal attacks and I had to resists the urge to post "well go back to CA you smelly socialist hippy" because that's not good cricket.

So is the issue simply as KSL suggests, between "off-roaders" who want access to all lands for all people and the environmentalist who are concerned about erosion and flammable weeds or is it a greater issue of the state vs Fed control of the land?

The name "Take Back UT" seems to suggest the later and that's why I was there. I believe the land needs to be managed, but I want that land managed by Utahns not a Fed gone wild. I don't want motorized vehicles blazing over every square inch of land but I want a comprehensive trail system. I bet anyone reading this would gladly stomp the guts of anyone they saw doing something stupid out there (figuratively of course).
I bet both sides of the issue could see the value of a resource plan that would generate more revenue for UT which would INCREASE resources to protect the land and enforce designated trail policies.

Am I off-base on this?

Your spot on JL, and that's what has me so upset about the coverage. The news interviewed a mom whose upset that her son got ticketed for speeding on his atv... Good! That's not why we rallied yesterday.. The coverage by most news was skewed and distorted. This leaves the public to think the rally was for upset rednecks who don't want be ticketed, have more trails, and carry thier guns as they please.

I think next rally needs to be more focussed on the Utah education side of things. That if Utah could control more land than we do currently, there'd be more revenue inside the state to help fund Utahs education ptograms.

Get Utah teachers to join in the parade with antena flag that say 'Utah teacher', or something, so that you would clearly how many teachers were there in addition to the other land users in general.

I think rally should step more in that direction so that the public will have to question tribune reports that still claim the rally to be about opening more trails. It'd take it to a larger level, and much larger audience willing to listen and join the fight.

My $0.02 anyway

Is anybody really surprised that the media is distorting it?

They have to "dramatize" it for the mtv generation. That's how they get their ratings. There's no ratings in news about people wanting to fix America and get our rights back. Hell no. But if they create a dissonance among people, including our own that might lead to more exciting mtv-like news.

The media is part of the problem.
