Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state and its laws were made by parliament.

"If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on national television.

"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia, one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said.

Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off".

"Basically, people who don't want to be Australians, and they don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then they can basically clear off," he said. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques.

AMERICA and Canada..... ARE YOU LISTENING?

Australia-The Right to Leave Our Country - YOU Have the right ..the right to leave !

After Sydney not wanting to offend other cultures by putting up Xmas lights. After hearing that the State of South Australia changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered.

This prompted this editorial written by an Australian citizen.

Published in an Australian newspaper.

Quote:

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.

However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia.

However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.

This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle.

This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the language!

Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push but a fact because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, Because God is part of our culture.

We will accept your beliefs and will not question why, all we ask is that you accept ours and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.

If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like " A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture but do not force it on others.

This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this.

But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE".

If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here.

You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.

Pretty easy really, when you think about it. I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends , sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please.

Thank you!

I feel that way about immigrated Utahns that want to change everything to match what they left in California. If I wanted to live in Kalifornia, I would. I choose to live here in this 'backward' state.

Are you saying californians are terrorizing utah?

Not necessarily. If I moved somewhere else, I'd try to fit in to the other culture for the most part. If anyone (eastern European, South African, Kalifornians, Brazilians, Mexicans) wants to live here, I don't have any issue with that. The issue I have is the people that move here and tell me how stupid and backward it is, here and want to change it to suit their wants. I'm not saying there couldn't be some improvements, but for the most part, I like it here. We speak Utah English here, like our green jello with shredded carrots, our legislators declare 'state pots' ( - that's a dutch oven if anyone cares) instead of create solutions to whatever problems, and have a GREAT landscape to choose from a number of activities. It's far from perfect, but it's where I live and I like it.

I worked for a company that bought out a small company in California. We moved about 10 employees and their families here who CHOSE to move here. All I heard from them was how much I'd like it if SLC was like LA. If I wanted to live in LA, I'd live there. I hope they like it and are happy there. I choose to live in 'backward-land'...........and am pretty happy with most of the conditions. It's a long way to the beach from SLC....... Tough to change that.

I'm sure not all Californians (or other immigrants) are like that, but from people that have moved into my neighborhoods and I've worked with from California, they tend to want to change things to what they left rather than fit in.

You know when greg and I decided to move out of california I told him I would not live in utah because of that exact attitude. Heaven forbid slc to become like La. And the spelling is California.

Gotta respect that. (isn't the spelling kinda regional :D ? Bay area is 'K' and other is 'C'?---I actually could spell pretty well in school--won a couple of spelling bees)

I do still try to give EVERYONE latitude as everyone has a different take on things. However, EVERYONE I've spent time with that's moved from the LA area (some quite good friends of mine and we just agree to disagree) wants to change how MY state is to be more like their home state. I respect their ability to do so through the democratic process, but I'd like it to stay similar to what it is (just with a few improvements--our liquor laws are seriously stupid for example).

I am just flat out tired of hearing Utah sucks from people that choose to move here on their own free will, and then proceed to complain how bad Utah sucks.

I was so tired of hearing that I finally started telling some of them to GTFO (including my brother in-law)(who lives in Washington state and now tells me how bad it sucks, haha), much like people that imigrate in from other countries and try to change things into little mexico, little korea, litte >insert country here<, you moved here on your own free will, now you must accept the fact that you are in a new country and acclimate accordingly.

Stop trying to bend me into your new ideal world, I all ready have one, called Salt Lake City, Utah United States of America.

I by no means think you should ditch your family heritage, your celebrations, etc.

Just learn to be American now that you live here... learn to be a Utahan now that you live here.

when in rome, russia, thailand, japan, >country here<, etc you move there you learn to live there, but you do not forget where you came from.

Why did you move from California? There must have been something you didn't like about it, right? Let's say gangs. (I don't know if you had a problem with gangs where you lived, so you can replace "gang" with whatever you disliked)

You currently don't have a gang problem in Fruita, I'm guessing. Do you want gangs to form or move there, so you'll feel more like "home"? Of course not. Some people do, though--it's just more comfortable for them.

I don't see that as being an attitude problem. The attitude problem is when you get Utahns that don't want people from CA living near them BECAUSE they're from CA. That happens everywhere though--anytime I go out of state I get weird assumptions about me because I'm from UT.

Greg hated it there...actually today I was thinking how I wanted to move back.

You are right fruita doesn't have gang problems just meth labs everywhere.

I find it interesting that this thread was started in relation to a country saying that they didn't want muslim terrorist to reside if they could not follow the rules and one of the first comments was how "Kalifornians" move to utah to ruin their quality of life.

i'm just not seeing any similarities to a muslim terrorist and a family californians.

I have no problem with Californians. I dislike people who live here and want to make it exactly like where they used to live. I am open to change, but let's not change everything.

It doesn't matter what state you used to live in, you are an American first.

I was a Utah transplant - from Oklahoma by way of Wyoming. I loved it there. Wish I was still there about every day - check the note under my name to the left. When I say I'm homesick, I'm thinking of Utah - not Oklahoma. Moab feels like my home now and I miss it.

I really loved it in Moab in the 80's - quiet and the cost of living was cheap. It cost a lot more now but I have a lot of friends that were starving back then and are doing pretty well now..... so I won't wish another bust on them.

My job has moved me many times - like 9 I think. You know how to be happy in a new location? Submerge yourself in whatever is going on in the new place. Do what everybody else does there for fun. Before you know it your content and having fun.
Drag your old ways along and you will never be happy. For example I love wheeling in the desert - there's no desert here though so I don't care much for it here. It's only temporary though, my family situation will change in 5 years or so and I'll have a chance to go someplace I like more. ;)

I'm trying to figure out how this turned into a Utah thread. Marc? :p

The thing going on in Austrailia is FAR different than what's going on here in Utah. This is about retaliating extremist religions threatening their security and democracy as a nation.

The direction this thread took is almost like me saying "I don't like that the Mormons moved here and changed everything from how the Native Americans had it so they could feel more comfortable..." IMO.

Although, I will agree that the Californians are driving up the real estate cost!
