We (tonkaman, and I) wanted to have a little getaway, so we made some plans and headed to moab. We were not sure how the weather would behave, so we made a very lose itinerary, and picked some easy going adventures. We headed out from south Jordan about 9:00 Thursday morning. Our first stop was in the town of thistle. I enjoy the history of thistle, and have enjoyed seeing the flooded homes, but have never visited the slide area. So up the hill we hiked.

We walked around for a little bit, and let the kids run around. We also found some wild bears in a cave.

We we continued on our way and made a stop in Price. My son was told we might stop at a dinosaur museum, so he wore his favorite dino shirt. We couldn't disappoint him, so into then CEU prehistoric museum we went. I was actually fairly impressed with it. I had not expected a lot, after all, it was in Price, right? The exhibits were well put together, and very kid friendly.

Our next stop stop was in green river. I am sure many of you have seen the giant temple looking thing just off the freeway. When it was first erected, I figured it was someone upset with the Mormons making a mockery of their temples. I googled it, and found it to actually be a piece of land art known as the 'Ratio'. It represents a couple different math equations. I have wanted to pay it a visit for a while now.

while in green river we headed out to see crystal geyser.

With the winter hours cutting our day short, it was now dark, so we bee lined to our hotel for the evening. The hotel lady was rude and short with me, but as soon as the handsome, bearded, and rugged Derek walked in, she changed her tone and became a pleasant host.
my children got the rare chance to watch TV, so they were super excited to hit the bed in the hotel.

Day 2 was slated to visit Arches National Park. I have only been there once as a child, and thought it was a good option for small hikes and good views. We decided to do as the tourists for the day. Into the visitors center we went.
IMG_0780.JPGThe kiddos loved the little animals out front of the visitors center.

After watch the 'windows in time' video we headed out into the park. The place was like a ghost town. We had zero traffic, saw very few people, and didn't have any issues with taking our own sweet time to do as we wished. We could stop in the Middle of the road and look at anything we wanted. This was truly a great time to visit arches!
we hiked around balancing rock, then 'windows' arches, and saw the parade of elephants.
We were able to let the kids run and play as they wished, and were not concerned about them interrupting the enjoyment of others.

We knew the hike to delicate arch would be a bit much for the kids, but Leimomi had her heart set on seeing it. We went to the lower viewing point, and she was able to see it.
IMG_0853.JPG

Our ut next stop was sand dune arch. A portion of this area was closed due to ongoing vandalism.
Photos to come.

It was onto the arches 4x4 road after that. This was going to be our first real dirt trail of the trip so far. After convincing my wife that her new expedition was perfectly capable and safe on the trail, we went on our way. I let her have the wheel, and she got her first taste of offroad driving
IMG_2668.jpg

It it wasn't but just a few miles down the road that the trail became quite a bit rougher than 'the book' or Internet reviews had indicated. My wife was less than thrilled at the idea of taking her expy through the rough, rocky, ledge filled section. We made it through with some well placed tires and good line choices. my children had gotten out to play while we surveyed the upcoming ledges, and they decided just to hike for a while, and somehow became my spotters.

IMG_0892.JPG

We made our way over to Tower Arch, but opted to view from a distance.
IMG_0904.JPG

The remainder of the trail wandered in and out of sandy washes. There were a few notable obstacles throughout, but nothing as serious as the previous ledges. It was a lot of fun to watch in my mirror and see Derek at WOT going baja style the the sandy washes. Towards the end, the trail had washed out, and we had some decent off camber driving to get out.

Day 2 continued:

We made it to Eye of the Whale Arch. None of us were able to make out a whale.. but maybe we don't have an imagination.
IMG_0918.JPGIMG_0920.JPG

We opted to head out of arches via Willow Springs Rd, in hopes of passing the dinosaur tracks. With Derek in the lead, they were able to find them just in time for us to pull up.

It was well after dark by this time, and it was getting cold. We made it back to Hwy 191, but could not pass up the chance to play on the giant sand hill. The vehicles provided just enough light to have an enjoyable time.

After the Sand hill, we headed into town for some good ol' Blue Pig!

The plan for day 3 was to head out Gemini Bridges, and back down Long Canyon. The morning was cold and wet. The rain varied from slight drizzle to heavy rain at periods. We had hoped to do the self guided dinosaur trail at the start of Gemini, but the rain wouldn't allow for it.
after we crossed the first rocky climb on Gemini, we dropped down in to the wet, sandy road. The road was smooth and quiet. The rain created beautiful water falls. We were privileged to be crossing most of the washes just as the water was beginning to flow.
IMG_0924.jpgIMG_0926.jpgIMG_0927.jpgIMG_0925.jpg

We made it to the bridges fairly quick. The views were great. We were a little more protective of the kids due to rain making it a little slippery.
IMG_0932.jpgIMG_0936.jpg

We headed up to hwy 313, and found ourselves in a snow storm.
IMG_0941.jpg

The start to Long Canyon was a snow covered dirt road, but as soon as we dropped down into pucker pass, the snow was gone and we were treated to some of the best views of the trip.

More from Pucker Pass:
IMG_0949.jpgIMG_0952.jpgIMG_0960.jpg

When we finished Long canyon we still had enough time to do something else, so we headed to Tusher tunnel. The first wash just after the rail road tracks was flowing pretty good.
IMG_0965.jpg

We made our way to the Tunnel. We were in no hurry, and the kids wanted to explore so we hiked around a bit. I have never exloped the back side of the tunnel, and was surprised at how much there was to see. We was a few more little caves, and an open cave/arch thingy.
IMG_0982.jpgIMG_0983.jpg

We finished up at the tunnel, and let the kids play in the parking area for a while.

We headed for the highway about 3:30, planning to hit Price for some dinner.
We had to make a stop at the gas station at the junction of 191 & 70. My son was FREAKING OUT because he saw lightning McQueen!
IMG_0993.jpg

After dinner in Price we headed up the canyon. There was a crazy good snow storm going on, and as usual people don't know how to drive.

We saw one Pick up that was in the ditch on his side. I thought it would be a lot of fun to winch him over. However, the roads were bad, and he was in a very unsafe spot for rescue. It would not be wise to keep our families in the cars on that spot, so we moved along.

This was a grand vacation. We were able to do many of the things that usually get past up due to time or other restrictions. Our families and children get along so well, that everything flows smooth and without drama (except of course at each restaurant, where my children have the ability to spill EVERYTHING all over the table)

One of my favorite trips.

Fun trip. So many things I've never seen or don't see much of because of being focused on 4 wheeling. Need to take the time to look around. I do love Moab in the rain.

Awesome. This is the trip we should have planned with our families a few weeks back, instead of the wheeling-focused one that didn't go as we thought it would...

Great pictures.

Great write up Brian. This trip was exactly what the kids wanted, and It turns out that even the adults enjoyed the kids agenda. I think I took 500 pictures on this adventure!

Awesome. I need to make this trip too - Like most people, these are the stops that we'll "make next time" but have yet to do.

Thanks for all the comments guys. We had a lot of fun. It's amazing how many other things we could have done as well. There is never a shortage of activities in this great State. We will have to make another similar trip.
