I would agree that it is best that HE contacts UHP and asks them how to prove the repairs are done (shows he wants it resolved) then do it quick according to the info they provide. It seems pretty clear that all three tickets are justifiable, so he needs to act on them.

And obviously I don't know your brother, but for the sake of honesty are you sure he was as kind as you say?

Certainly cops are not always as polite as they should be, but neither are young men getting multiple tickets on the way to college....

Yes, I'm sure he was kind and calm. My mom was in the Jeep with him at the time, and my dad was parked right behind him in our '05 Taco. My bro isn't stupid enough to start anything with cops in any situation, much less while on his way to Oregon with both of my parents there with him.

As for registering in Oregon, no, it'll have Utah plates. He's going to a private school (lotza scholarships, we're not rich), so it doesn't matter if he establishes residency. Like someone said, Oregon's laws and cops are far worse than Utah's because Oregon is home of the tree hugger. If you don't believe me, look up the 2000 presidential election results. Check out how many votes Ralph Nader brought in for the Green Party.

Anyways, I'll let my brother know that he needs to call and find out what exactly he can do. He's trying to get the windshield fixed ASAP, and he's shopping for wider flares as well. He already bought some mud flaps that he's going to try to ghetto-rig on.

Mom being there always helps!! That might just be the solution to road rage- have Moms be standard equipment on all cars!

Sounds like a situation that should be pretty easy to work out by making the repairs.

Good luck.

First off, the Cop was not an ass, he was just doing his job. The U4WDA has spent a lot of time working with the UHP in changing the lift laws for US that is You and Me.
Mud Flaps are Mandatory
Fender Flares MUST cover the ENTIRE top portian of the wheel.
A crack in the windshield over 18" in lenth is Illegal.

Get them all fixed and the fine will be much less.

Is it a length thing on the crack? I thought it was if the crack crossed the drivers view (no matter what length)?

And to clarify on the mudflap, it has to cover the upper half of the tire. Simply having mud flaps doesn't make you legal.

I think it's both...you can have a crack up to XX long as long as it's not in the driver's view. If it's longer than allowed, or in the driver's view area, it's in need of replacement.

Makes sense...

I can make him a set of disconnect fender flares for a discount price ;). If you pick them up and mail them to him he will be good to go. He would need to purchase the rubber flare itself but I can make him the hinge and mounting piece. It won't look great but it will work ;) . PM me for details.

1. Mud Flaps must cover two things - The upper 50% of the tire when looking from the rear of the vehicle and they must be the width of the tire.

2. Windshields cannot have any crack that obsures the vision of the driver, nor any crack that is 18 inches in length or greater.

3. Flares must cover the entire width of the tire.

If you wait for the court to contact you it will be a mistake. Unless you check the "court appearance" block on the citation and mail it in they have no clue that you wish to do so. Therefore if you wait for them to contact you it might just be a failure to comply which will end up costing you more money.
You have three options, actually four
a. pay the tickets - asshole or not, they are legit

b. Don't pay the tickets - next time that you are pulled over for something trivial they will run a wants and warrants and you will be apprehended for an out standing warrant.

c. Call the court and see if you can work out a deal where you can get it inspected at an out of state location to reduce the amount of the fine. If you didn't get a fix it ticket (which is different from a "pay" ticket) you will end up paying something, the entire cost, court cost, admin fee, or partial fee. Rarely will they completely drop it.

d. Call the court and request a court date for the time frame when he'll be back in the states.

Hopes this helps

Exactly.. Worse case he could get it extended. If he acts quickly, then the courts will see he is trying to get it taken care of, rather than waiting weeks until it's too late, IMO.
